I hate to be the bearer of bad news to such a cool avatar, but unless you have a specific clause in your lease agreement about when the AC is turned on, it's considered a luxury, not a necessity, and the landlord isn't even required to turn it on at all.

Laws vary state to state, but unless you have something in writing you're probably out of luck, sorry.Smiley: cry

Yeah, there's minimum temperature heating laws for virtually every state, but no maximums that I know of.

Plus there is the little fact of you being a complete jerk whom deserves to fry the the little ******* you are.

I hope it's one week of over 90 degree temperature for every movie you ruined.

No hard feelings though, I think I'll go turn my heater on, it's a little chilly in my room.

Id turn it on myself if i were in your shoes. Can you figure out how? Heck ill talk you through it on the pphone

Is it a house?

call an AC guy and see if they can tell you how to do it. Im sure you can find a symathetic ear.

Or call the newspaper or tv and see if they have a consumer advocacy dept. We do in Phoenix

I live in a large apartment complex with a qwuite large cooling system for the entire comples (I live right next to it, I can get my apartment down to 30 degrees as soon as they turn the ****** on)

I don't feel like breaking into the matince room with a pair of bolt cutters so I will just sweat it out.

Suck it up, crybaby.

That said, check your lease. There might be a turn-on date in there like May 15, June 1, etc. If not you're SOL since I doubt it's just a pair of bolt cutters keeping you out of the maintenance room.

If it's central AC, I doubt they'll turn it on until the old people start dying since they don't want to pay the bills for an apartment full of dips trying to make it 30 degrees.

So, you aren't gonna move out? :P

P.S. For what it's worth, I have no AC (most places in SF don't) and I use fans and air circulation to cool my flat.

Roast a pig in your bathtub. It may not get teh ac turned on, but the massive amount of smoke should get the landlord to contact you, and if she does;t...

You'll at least have a raosted pig.

No AC here either. But then, I live about a half mile from the ocean, and have decent shade.

I second Joph. Check your lease. I've never lived in an appartment complex so I have no idea how that sort of thing works. I actually assumed that each unit had their own AC controls. But I guess if you've got one of those "utilities paid" deals, they probably do have designated date ranges where they shut off the whole thing (so as to prevent dorks who'll run the AC 24 hours a day even when it's 40 degrees outside from costing everyone money).

There should be terms in the lease. If AC is included as something you get for your rent, then it'll have terms for the AC. That should include who pays for it, when it can be used, and everything else you'd need to know.

Gads. Get out of appartments. Get a few friends. Rent a house. Heck. Rent a condo or townhouse. Those will all have separate AC/heat. Then you're master of your own destinty (kinda). Sharing AC with 200 other people just seems... wrong.

Hmm.. have you tried asking your landlord? =P Or perhaps tell her she's a cheap ***** and that you're dying instead of posting it in a forum she most likely won't be reading. ^^

At which point she proceeds to laugh and still collect rent from you while you're also paying rent for your new apartment.

Hey p srry to hear about u'r problem about the A/C.
This is what i would do the next time the A/C come's on locate the A/C system that is running for u'r apt.. If u do find that the A/C system is shared with u and the landlord if she make's it bad for u make it bad for her cut the t-stat wire that control's the A/c unit. Dont worrie about getting shocked there is only 24volt's running threw the wire. You dont have to move just make it bad for the landlord.
And if u'r wondering I've been doing A/C for 10yr's

How about a landlord that doesn't turn the heat off in spring?

A few years ago I was home one evening in late April, temperature of about 60, but my apartment was sweltering - so hot that I almost passed out. Called landlord, maintenance, then eventually 911. Even with all the windows, doors open and fans blowing, it was over 100 degrees. Someone looked in the basement and discovered that one of the heating units or whatever from the building's boiler was stuck all the way on. That was fun.
