This has nothing to do with it. Everybody has one life, and I consider my time at least as valuable as any other persons. In fact, if the ***** was sitting around counting her money, bored out of her skull, maybe she should deserve less credit for getting off her *** and helping someone.

See but the average person may or may not make the same decisions. I too believe my life is just as valuable as the next guys. After all the snotnose teenage brat of today can be a doctor tomorrow with the right influence. All of the men and women serving there are doing a great thing. If it takes the story of an athlete to drive it in then why not? They're all heroes. Hell we're here ranting and raving spouting off about whatever the hell we want to because brave men and women make the choice to defend us.

The best I could come up with for ya, Smash, was a quick promotion to Soviet Infantryman 3rd Class or KGB agent. Sorry, no Hero of the Soviet Union badges.

Nice! I'm gettin me one of those.

Hey, my buddy has a Soviet bike from the 80's. Looks like a Harley but leaks more oil which I didn't think was possible. Forget what it was called, but that site reminded me of it for some reason.

Not that impressive. The CMH is at least a little gaudy. Now the FRENCH, they know how to make meadls. Although rumor has it you just have to make it through combat without wetting yourself to get a Crois de Guerre these days.

Check that bad boy out.

I appreciate the sentiment, Reinman, but really, I did nothing extraordinary. I served in a manner that thousands of others did just as well, if not better. I suppose if there is anything I am proud of it'd be that I got each and every one of my troops back home without a scratch while accomplishing the mission given us. That allows me to sleep well at night.

I got a couple of Air Medals, but they handed those out like candy at Halloween, so no big deal. The way that works is you fly without ******** up for X amount of time and they say, "Good job! And by the way, we appreciate you not wrecking our aircraft. Here's a token of our gratitude."

But I sure had some fun back then. Aviators always get away with murder.

That's not as bad. Much as a guy with a rifle and 9,000,000 rounds of amunition worries me he worried me less than the guy with the stockpiles of nitrates and disel.

Smash why re you fooling around with those p*ssy French and Russian trinkets for this is the baby your after.

The Victoria Cross.

Look it up, unfortunatly i haven't got one yet but i'm working on it.

But seriously i don't want to seem cynical here but ther is just no way this just got bored and joined up, there where motivves behind it and i am pretty damn sure it was politically motivated, he realised his NFL career was pretty much going to peater out soon <Hello!!! he was playing for the freaking Cardinals!>
So he figured 5-10 years in the forces a couple of campain medals maybe a purple heart and his Political career was pretty much set.

This doesn't make his death any less Tragic but no more 6' o'clock news than any other Jo Bloggs that Uncle Sam sends on his Moralistic Crusades around the globe.

The people who died on 11/9 deserve more sympathy than a professional soldier who knew exactly what he was getting into.

drape a flag over his box give him a 21 gun salute the leave his family to mourn the loss.

True he played for the Cardinals and they suck, but he set the single season tackle record while he was there, he stayed with them even when the Super Bowl champs offered him more money out of loyalty, no one else would take him out of college.

Ok so enlighten me, explain why someone who was earning $millions joined the military.

Here's the thing, the military suck's, the pay is bad and the condidtions are worse, the only benefit is people think <mistakenly> that your a brave, heroic figure who serves thier country.

Hey guess what! We aren't brave, we aren't heroic and we joined because it's a secure pay check, that in the States at least gets you a collage education at the end of it.

Most people join because they have no choise.

Either thier job situation is pretty poor or they lack the education to do something better.

Then thier are the people who do it for other reasons.
They need it for political reasons or they are bloodlusting psycho's who like the thought of killing some '****' or 'Raghead'.

So having said all that, you enlighten me to exactly why this multi- millionaire joined the forces and please don't roll that patriotic **** out there is exactly 0% on the forces that joined up to be patriotic.

I think you're wrong about this particular guy, Tarv. He went out of his way to avoid any sort of publicity and not in a "protests too much" kind of way. That's not how you'd start a political carreer in the US.

Ever hear of you friend Kerry prior to him atually running for office.

I'm not saying he was thinking about politics but there are only two reasons why someone would leave a multi million dollar job to live in a pot hole and get shot at.

1. Insanity

2. You have a long term agenda.

Or 3: He was one of those rare civic minded individuals who wanted to give something back to the country he claimed as his own.

The one thing everybody who knew or worked with him agrees on is that Tillman had heart-- alot of it.

If this where true he could have stayed playing in the NFL and devoted his increadable amount of money and time off to benefit those who needed it in his own country that he said he loved.

Think of all those people like Flishtaco who he could have given time to people who were Ill or homeless that he could have guilded.

Big hearted does not include shooting people.

Agreed but why join the army it doesn't make sence.

America is a country with huge sociel and ecconomic problems he would have been better of working for a charity instead of gunning down people in afganistan.

Tarv, who are we to determine how he should best fulfill his need to serve his country? What you are suggesting is much like the old Soviet way of placing individuals in jobs that suits the State. If that were the measure of how best people could improve their homeland, then a huge number of folks would be enriching my lawn with their nutrient rich corpses since that is the most they have to offer with their pathetic lives. But, strangely enough, I don't hear you advocating civil service of that nature...

From each according to his ability to each according to his need.

Look, the guy's dead. his motivations for doing what he did are unkowable and irrelevant. The public record of every action in his life indicates that it's overwhelmingly likely that he was selfless and had a desire to do what he considered best for his country the best way that he could.

He might have been an evil **** spy, whatever. Let his memory be what it is without speculating as to how insinscere it is.

I don't think it is that hard to be a hero.
I think you just proved the point for us that you're using the "term" in a trivial manner.

Being a hero is a big deal.

Of course, in this country pro sports atheletes are called heroes by many, so it's not hard to see why the term has lost significance in people's minds.
