Well... i purchased splinter cell: pandora tommorow today and it runs like crap. granted it isnt unplayable, but its hiccups fairly frequently, even with the graphics set on the lowest level.

i have 512 pc 1133 DDR (im not sure on the pc, it may be off) an amd athlon xp 2000+ and a geforce 5200 FX ultra.

now it would seem to me that would be more than enough to run it on its lowest detail setting seeing as those specs fall within the reccomended ratings.

i believe this may be due to some bizaareness in my proccessor. in the bios and in direct x diagnostics my processors actual speed is listed as 1.2 ghz. now i know an athlon xp 2000+ doesnt run at 2ghz, but i thought it was closer to actually being clocked at 1.8 instead of 1.2

i read this article which seems to fit my problem, but i cant make sense of how to go about doing the changes.

yeah, it should be running higher than 1.2ghz. It should ideally read at 1.67 ghz without overclocking, and is capable of going up to 1.8 if you have a very good cooling system (8 fans or water cooling) The frontside bus speed it is talking about is a setting that can be changed in your motherboards bios program. To get into the bios, usually you press "F1" right after startup. some programs use the delete key, or some other key. it should prompt you on the screen.

Once you are in the bios, there are a couple things to look for. There should be a toggle for FSB of 100, 133, and higher. if it is lower than 100, bump it up to 100. if it is at 100, take it to 133, then restart and check the clock speed. If it is reading higher than 1.67 after that, you have it set too high. immidiatly go back into bios and lower it one notch, otherwise you WILL most likely fry your processor.

While you are in the bios, you might also want to take the oppertunity to check the video card settings. The geforce fx 5200 ultra there is an 8x card. see if you can find something that says "agp aperature". you want it set at 8x, with 128MB throughput. Different boards use differnet terms for that, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Running disk defragmenter also couldn't hurt. also run housecall.trendmicro.com

You might be running out of ram depending on how many startup programs you have. go to start:run and type in msconfig look on the startup tab and see if there is anything you don't need, like quicktime or realplayer that you can set not to load at startup. Adding another stick of ram would also give you quite a boost for very little money. ram is dirt cheap right now. Have seen pc133 sticks of 512mb new going for $40 here in Houston

Let me know if that doesn't work

oh, and the tech support forum is here:

Otherwise I have to charge by the hour. union rules...

Some motherboards have a switch On the board to control the fsb. I had a similar problem with my PC and couldn't fix it from the bios program. Once the switch was flipped from 100 to 133 the processor started working at the proper speed.

good point. Most of the boards that will run an xp2000 will have them in bios though, but it is a possibility.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! help help help! i destroyed my computer.

i was going through the bios and i changed a few settings. one i believe was in the advanced settings area. i forget the name but it was similar to "computer graphics" or "texture graphics" or something along those lines. it was set at "64m" and i changed it to 128m. i saved this and it caused no problems. i then went into something with PNP in it (i do not believe it was the plug and play settings area, as this was a seperate thing) and i changed the cpu speed or something along those lines. it started at 100/100 and i could change it to 100/133 and 166/133. i changed it to 100/133 (i think, im not 100% sure) and after saving the settings and exiting (again. i saved and exited on the graphics thingy earlier) my computer ceased to work. the screen went black and nothing happened. i shut off the computer (via the power switch in the back) and attempted to turn it on again. the power went on etc but *nothing* appeared on the screen and i didnt hear a "boop" sound when i started it.

i have no idea what i should do to even try to go about fixing it. did i fry my processor in the space of a second?

ack! first thing, your processor is fine. it looks like you set your computer higher than your video card can detect a signal from. try powering up and pressing f1 and see if it will let you into the bios screen. if not, you may need to reset the bios. there may be a jumper to do that. your best bet on fixing that will be to call the motherboard tech support line.

annoying, but not hardware damaging.
