has anyone else noticed pop-ups on this site? i usually don't get them until i navigate away to another page (which is annoying since this is my home page). If no one else has noticed them, i'll find a new spyware program... they all say Allakhazam's Magical Realm in the title bar, but then they turn out to be ads for some crazy stuff... stuff that no eq'r in their right mind would be worried about...
thanks in advance for any replies :p

Then you have some sort of scumware on your computer feeding you ads. Run Ad-Aware and/or SpyBot to search for advertising programs on your system.

Use mozilla! http://www.mozilla.org
Automatically blocks popups (I never recieve any - It's great), open source, works well, and is constantly being updated, also many times more secure than IE

Unless it is in the registry, this should get rid of it:

Step one. run a search for any "hosts" files that may have been created on the machine. Chances are they are not needed, so rename them to something other than hosts for the time being so they won't be active.

Next in internet explorer go to Tools: Internet Options. On the General tab, Click on Delete cookies; Delete files (delete all ofline files is Checked); click on the settings button, go to view files (delete anything in that directory) then click view objects (Also delete anything in that directory). Click Clear History.

On the security tab, Select Internet and then click on custom level then select Reset to: Medium and press the reset button.

On the Content tab, click Clear SSL state

On the Connections tab, if you are connected via a network card, click on the LAN button. If the Proxy server section has any content in it, or is checked, uncheck and delete all information.

On the Programs tab, press the Reset all web settings button

On the advanced tab, click the restore all defaults.

Now go to Start:Run and type in ipconfig /flushdns

After that, restart the computer and see if it will connect to the internet when it restarts. If it will, great. If it won't there is probably still another registry key that is messed up. The easiest way to fix that will be to grab a new copy of internet explorer (you can get IE 6 off the windows XP cd) and install it over the existing copy.

That should reset most vectors of problems. If not, it may be in the VxD's or the registry. Easiest thing to do at that point may be to just reinstall windows. Running "Hijackthis" could also help.

by the way, if you want to stick with IE, the avantbrowser is a pretty good choice. a tad bit mroe stalbe than firefox. www.avantbrowser.com

Is it loading a specific pop up over and over? if so, for what company?

Personally, I've never had Moz crash on me, but I have heard good things about Avant... But I love my Mozilla, so I'll advocate it forever ^^

I have been fighting the same battle with my work computer. and more recently my gf's computer started as well. I use ad-aware and spy-bot and both can't find the problem (or continually find new entries, erases them and the problem returns immediately). I even started using Ad-Muncher which helps...but I still get a pop-up once in a while that turns into a little box I cannot select in the corner of my screen and usually says "Click Here" or something in the caption.

EDIT: hm. I've tried this "kaolian method" once before and it didnt completely rid me of the pop-ups. I tried it again just now and ad-muncher is not picking up a single hit anymore. I even got my IE executable back. can you delete the renamed host files after restarting?

If I could rate you Kaolian, I would rate you very high :)
I did what you said, and that fixed it. The first time I opened Alla's after doing all that, i got like 500 windows that came up, but there was no information on them or in their source files. I spent about 20 minutes ending task on them all from the task manager. No pop-ups since! W00t!!!

I was using Avant for a while, and really liked it, but there were a few times after spending about 30 minutes straight surfing websites, it stops working. The links won't click, the back button won't work... I had to close it out and re-open it. So I went back to using Moz. Firefox.
