what is the exact url it is redirecting your browser to? is it adding a toolbar? I can help, but I need to know exactly which one it is first.

I deleted the homepage address and it hasn't come back yet. when it does I'll post it. Usually it takes a day or 2 to rehigh jack my homepage.

It doesn't add to my tool bar but it does make a new window, even though I have popblocker on.

the new window has no url just says microsoft internet explore and shows an add or says server can't be found or its a blank window that shows nothing.

hope that helps.

i keep having the same problem. and the browser re-directs to a link somewhere in "shopnav.com" when a page is not found or an error occurs so i think it has something to do with that site.

I got it under control by deleting my temp folder, cookies, uninstalling IE and removing it from the windows application database. by doing that I can still run IE, but have to open it using a saved HTML page as the actual exe for IE doesn't exist..which has me worried as well, but assume its just built into windows somewhere.

I use Ad-Muncher now and it still returns every now and again, but the companies buying me a new laptop soon so i'm not worried anymore. its a pain though, i can sympathize with you.

Removal
Open the registry (click 'Start', choose 'Run', and type 'regedit'), and find the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. In the list of values on the right, delete the 'srng' entry.

Next, open a DOS command prompt window (from Start->Programs->Accessories) and enter the following commands, for the IE variant:

cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SearchHook.dll"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\IEHelper.dll"
Or for the SN variant:

cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SNHelper.dll"
Restart the machine and you should be able to delete the 'Srng' folder inside the Program Files folder. You can also open the registry (Start->Run->regedit) and delete key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Srng, and delete the 'words.lst' file in the Windows folder to clean up if you like.

Finally, restore the normal search settings (Internet Options->Programs->Reset Web Settings).

I'm still annoyed, but bored.

Rabes, do this for now. should at least git rid of it temporarily.

Try this:

Step one. run a search for any "hosts" files that may have been created on the machine. Chances are they are not needed, so rename them to something other than hosts for the time being so they won't be active.

Next in internet explorer go to Tools: Internet Options. On the General tab, Click on Delete cookies; Delete files (delete all ofline files is Checked); click on the settings button, go to view files (delete anything in that directory) then click view objects (Also delete anything in that directory). Click Clear History.

On the security tab, Select Internet and then click on custom level then select Reset to: Medium and press the reset button.

On the Content tab, click Clear SSL state

On the Connections tab, if you are connected via a network card, click on the LAN button. If the Proxy server section has any content in it, or is checked, uncheck and delete all information.

On the Programs tab, press the Reset all web settings button

On the advanced tab, click the restore all defaults.

Now go to Start:Run and type in ipconfig /flushdns

After that, restart the computer and see if it will connect to the internet when it restarts. If it will, great. If it won't there is probably still another registry key that is messed up. The easiest way to fix that will be to grab a new copy of internet explorer (you can get IE 6 off the windows XP cd) and install it over the existing copy.

That should reset most vectors of problems. If not, it may be in the VxD's or the registry. Easiest thing to do at that point may be to just reinstall windows. Running "Hijackthis" could also help.

WOOT! thank goodness for boredom. Smiley: grin

I may have removed it somehow through my wreckless attempts at deleting random things to get rid of this stuff. might explain why it only returns every so often. "Srng" was not in the registry. but when I opened regedit, it was already in the directory you said to go to. here's a screenie of what I have in there.

that reg key is the trigger element. The two dos commands will destroy the reinstall vector. If you like just wait until it comes back, as that would work too.

how do you normally go about finding what element is associated with what service or vice versa?

searches, trial and error, experiance fixing them, familiarity with at the internet explorer regestry and what shouldn't be in there. Depends on the issue.
