Is it worth it?Follow

Recently I had a friend start FFXI back up again. I actually became good friends with him last year after quitting FFXI. I was shocked to find out he actually played once. Long story short, he started a new character on Ceberus and has been going at it pretty well. He keeps pushing me to return and transfer to his server which is Cerberus.

Is it worth it though after over a year of a real life filled with college partying and regular write ups for NHL.com?

I thought I had moved on, but here I am on the verge of being sucked back into FFXI.

Honestly I want to have fun mainly in Limbus which was the most fun event ever. I currently have BRD, DRG, and NIN to 75 as well as SAM and BLU close to 70 if I remember correctly. Pretty decent endgame haul already. All subjobs. Nearly full merits. I've accomplished all original Dynamis through beating the Lord. I've beaten all of Limbus and run it a bunch on my own. I've run Salvage and Einherjar runs before I left. Completed everything sky has to offer. Beaten up most of sea. I've defeated most HNMs exlcluding Vrtra along with whatever new ones that SE has made by now. And when I quit 2 septembers ago I was up to date in ToAU.

Is Wings of the Goddess good? Is the new exping thing worth all the hype? Are the new jobs worth trying? Is Odin so much of a challenge that I should at least try to take him on once? And mainly is Cerberus worth going to if I want to destroy whatever life a year and a half away from FFXI has given me?

It is hard to give exact answers to your questions. It is in my opinion that there are a lot of contents already, so the number of content is not the problem, is whether you like it or not.

End game will always have its own merit and issues. Einherjar is a relatively quick and short event compare to a lot of other things. It can be fun, and for sure much less of a grind. Cerberus, or just about any other HNM, will have competition, and I give no bother to it at all.

Level Syth is not intended to have you level syth down with your high level gear to trample over all the enemies. It is intended to make PT easier to begin. So it is easier to exp with level syth, but it is not for your "Look at me owning this bunny with my 75 gear lolz".

If you want to come back, why just do not give it a try since you want to, and let yourself answer the questions. It is still 12 bucks per month, far less cheaper than a mobile phone or feeding your car :P It is a more a thing about how much time you have and how much fun you get.

I've done Einherjar. It was a lot of fun though I did it really as soon as it came out so we found it relatively difficult.

Level Syth sounds cool but I'm a 75 bard. Unless things have changed drastically I can either LFP on dragoon or ninja looking for parties for hours or just LFP on bard and get easy xp. I'd try it but I'd solo on dragoon just to have fun before doing something like that all the time. I still don't understand everything it entails.

As far as Cerberus is concerned I'm talking about the server not the HNM. It was easy enough to beat and I guess not worth doing again unless you're in it for the thrill.

I'm talking about the Cerberus server. Is it a good place to rejoin the game? Are there a lot of groups willing to do Limbus/Salvage etc? I remember running Salvage as soon as it came out with my own little group, and I had a blast. Limbus of course was the best, and if I came back I'd want to get into certain aspects of endgame for fun if not all. I assume people don't do sky and stuff much anymore but ToAU stuff would be fun. I still don't know what WotG stuff there is to do.

Any server has its numerous problems. Basically I want to know if there isn't some stupid fued between end game shells. I'm sure there is but I'm not interested in dumb drama or purposefully MPKing other endgame shells. That happened far too much on my old server. Drama over drops caused friends to quit and backstab others. The events were fun but the stupidity of the people wasn't. I want to know in general what the server is like? I had a many JP friends on my old server. Are they just as nice on Cerberus or bitter and proud? Basically I care about the quality of people not the quality of competition.

$12 a month isn't bad, but it's been such a long time that I'm afraid the people and game might have changed for the worse. Hell, when I finally quit it was getting worse by the day. That's from someone who's been around basically since the NA start.

What you are worried about is exactly what happened to me. The game changed so much that it really wasn't enjoyable for me. I wasn't able to function or play the game how I remembered it.

Be prepared to pull with your bard. Hell be prepared to be a bard for life. While it's a fun job and enjoyable to an extent, in parties all you are is xp to needy melee. End-game the job is so boring.

Despite what I say, it's really up to you to decide if it's worth it or not. Play for a couple months and see if the game is still for you. In the end, all you spent was that $12 to find out for yourself.

That and the haters that like to rate me down. lol. Get a life.

I think you will find the game a lot more fun if you are do not let your drive to be to strayed away for gear. I find the game a lot more better if you treat like a fancy chat system that have some fancy pixelated items come with it. Do not play for the gear, but play as in the gear as a bonus.

Often it is a lot harder to do than to say, when you are playing with people who are looking for gear and E-Peen first >_>

Thanks Kyrin but I'm well aware of what the life of a bard entails. Sing song A. Sing song B. Pull. Sing song C. Sing song D. Pull. Rinse. Repeat.

It was fun sometimes when doing it with fun people. End-game bard is just boring. That's why I became a leader. I started running limbus and raids and stuff. It's far less boring if you're coordinating something rather than just singing random songs so the melee can see who can do the most damage. I'm sure that hasn't changed at all.

And scchan the only thing I'm really interested is accomplishing what I haven't yet. That's the only reason I would come back. If the people cool enough for me to stay and hang out then there would be no problems. I have my doubts still that the game can even allow for such a thing. I'm sure people can have a good time but it's all to "look cooler" so to speak. I know exactly what you're talking about. I think the only way I can have fun is by having a good time and basically finishing the story lines, beating Einherjar/Salvage/etc.

I don't care if I look cool to however many people are running around. I just want to see what FFXI has done in the time I've been gone. Redo everything that was fun and challenge everything I haven't beaten.

I still have to think about this, but thanks for the insight.

Of course, accomplishments in the game is fun. I think it really depends on what you mean by accomplished. I think I am quite accomplished imo, so in terms of achievements I think I am quite pleased where I am, but there are certainly things I have never done before.

I think it is more an issue of how to get to the goal. And a lot of people are trying to get to the goal the way I do not like. Of course I myself, just like others, work on missions and other stuff as well. It is more like... do you want to get fed and not hungry with a McDonald's burger or a perfectly cooked steak. Both will you fill you up, both are beef, but apart from that... everything else are different. (I prefer to steak of course)

I personally think Ama has one of the best views of FFXI anyone could aim to have. He works heaps, still plays (a lot?) but never loses sight of the fact that this is intented to be a fun and _social_ game, and he has always been one of the friendliest and most helpful people I've had the pleasure of meeting in game. Not everyone plays FFXI for these reasons unfortunately!

I also believe if you're coming back to the game thinking that it will destroy your social (ie. actual) life before you've even started, its probably not worth tempting yourself :) But I do believe if you find a good LS that does events you like, you can log on for those events when you can, have a chat and log off. It's totally do-able provided you don't get the HNM gear addiction.

Although I do enjoy some parts of HNMLS, I much prefer my time having fun, doing events with friends. For exp specifically, Level Sync has really helped that - now we can party together much easier regardless of what level our jobs-of-choice are at. I do think if you enjoy casual exping, it has been a great addition especially for jobs that wouldn't otherwise get parties at 70+ (like PLD!). Campaign battles are good too, and allows you to do something solo or in small parties for exp if you want to.

But make no mistake: from my (relatively) brief experience, end-game is always end-game.. there's hundreds of people wanting gear, and I'd say more feuds within LS members even than between different LS. There will always be favoritism, "unfair" decisions or whatever and I'm sure that happens on all servers and many (not all^^) HNMLS. If you're willing to sit back, relax and enjoy those parts of the game until the day someone calls your name for an item, I think it can be quite fun. Otherwise, just make a point of avoiding it altogether and just do events like the missions for ToAU and WoTG, assaults, ZNM with friends. Both Nyzul Isle and ZNM (Zeni) requires (mostly!) achievable groups and can reward with some quite nice armours without the HNM hassles if that's what you're after. As I'm sure you know, you don't need a HNMLS specifically to do Limbus and the like if that's what you enjoy. I'd say if you focused on those things, you could get a good taste of it after a few months, and you can re-assess again.

Despite new content, new jobs etc. FFXI is really the same experience you've always had - so with 3 75 jobs already, I think you already know if this is something you want to try again. Just don't forget to answer when something else calls your name, including sleep! ^^
