Ok so I d/led the FFXI Benchmark 3 yesterday and hit a 3100. Not very happy with it. If I try to FRAPs anything I'll be under 20 FPS and it's annoying.
Currently I'm running an ATI Radeon 9600 AGP 8X. I have a LGA775 2.8HT CPU and 1gb of PC3200 memory.
I am willing to upgrade the mobo to one with PCI Express x16 if that's what's necessary.
I'm looking for suggestions as to what to go with. I'm currently looking at 6600GTs and X800GTOs. Any suggestions? I want to be able to FRAPs our CoP battles etc and I just can't do it. ; ;

dunno how much video ram you have, but that can make an impact too. I have an 8x 256 meg 9800 vid card and it isn't too bad when I use FRAPs. I can notice a different in performance, but no difference between battle w/ fraps on and battle in over camped zone. Same are pretty equiv. amounts of lag... I am running on an AMD Athlon 2800+ XP Barton with a gig of pc133 ram. Also, I keep absolutely ZERO background programs running and only the few services I need for normal operation.
I'm going to check my BIOS settings tonight and make sure something is not goofed up there. If they're all in good shape, I might just get a 8X AGP 6600GT. I'm not sure I feel like going motherboard and vid card when I'm getting Xbox 360 in a month. LoL

Seriously though, I never had luck with the game and the Radeon cards. I had a PCI w/256MB, etc, but I was always getting booted out of the game, or it froze up, or FRAPs was low.
I tossed the Radeon card in my network closet and I now have a GeForce 6600 (also a 8x AGP) with 256MB mem (which we all know is key). With FFXI the memory and power of your video card is more crucial then your processor speed, since the video card is actually doing the most work. Now keep in mind I am also on my self-built baby here at home... I built this box as a gaming and DVD ripping monster, so I am running a 64bit AMD 3000+ processor which runs @ over 3.6 Ghz... so I am smoking all the damn time.
Now my personal opinion (which is supported by much self-done research) is that unless you are running dual processors and dual PCI-express cards, you won't see much difference between a (single)PCI-Express card and a GOOOOOD video card....
Now onto my FRAPS experience with my baby monser box. I can stand in Jeuno in a disgustingly busy AH area, prime time, and NEVER drop below 29/30 FPS....
Now when I travel/am at work I game on a Toshiba Satellite laptop with a GeForce 128MB mobile card and she runs between 17-29 most times. Although when I am in heavily congested areas, it tends to get a 'lil choppy and pop down to 10-14 and then back up. The laptop has a P4 3.2Ghz proc... I just seem to have better luck with the Nvidia family.

Yes, when running FRAPS your frames per second will be displayed in the top right corner I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong... I know you will.

Yep.. by default it's in the top right. you can move it around (F12 I think) until it's at any corner or off the screen all together.
Yeah I've considered dual 6600s in SLI format but man. That's a lot for one game when I'm buying the new Xbox next month. LoL.

Yeah I checked all my settings this weekend and all of them are set to performance. I'm still only hitting 3100 on high (and low just looks like crap).
*sigh* I caved guys. LoL. I just ordered a new motherboard, Powercolor Radeon x800GT 256mb PCI Express vid card, and a 19" pure flat CRT monitor. :-/. If that doesn't give me good res and kill the video lag, I'll be PISSED. LoL. I'll still have some server lag, but my vid lag better be next to none now.
I ALMOST bought the GeForce 7800GT but I didn't feel like coughing up 350 just for the card.
