So they recently announced the base Xbox 360 will not have a HDD, and one will be optional although they say no game will require it. The HDD is for media downloads and other nonsense, and is a puny 20GB at a cost of $100???

Sooo same as the PS3? With no developers committed to using the HDD, because they are skeptical consumers will go for it? And consumers wont go for it because developers arnt committing to any games. Hell, sounds like the PS2 HDD (which was larger and cheaper then the 360 one).

This has got to be a slap in the face for SE. I thought the reason they went to Xbox 360 in the first place was over the hard drive issue >.<

So much for a large flood of fresh new players... The price will scare off a lot of people. But maybe through some miracle SE can get FFXI preinstalled on the XBOX hard drive when it ships ^^

The $100 extra is more than just the HDD. It includes a wireless controller (vs. the wired), the HDD which comes preloaded with some info, the Live headset, a HD input cable, and a couple other things. So it's not quite like spending $100 just for the HDD.

However, buying the HDD seperately is $90 if I remember correctly. LoL.

As a disclaimer, I got all this info from an LS mate (Xim) who copied and pasted it all on our LS site.

yea im not impressed at all with the new systems coming out.

Personally i dont think its time as the graphics havnt even reached their peak yet on the 128 bit consoles.
ex. The zelda, Okami, Beacon Games look hellz alot better than anything ive seen for the 360. as of yet and the whole HDD issue makes my head hurt.

also have you seen Okami? check that **** out

On xbox.com they explain that they will be selling 2 systems. The Xbox 360 is the fully loaded version for ($399). They are also offering a core version for ($299).

Kids are going to have a very hard time to convince their parents to buy the more expensive version of an already expensive system, especially if no content to date is planned for the HDD (with the possible exception of FFXI).

When Christmas rolls around, expect the core system under the tree (and even then you have had to be really, really good this year ^^)

Okay, as I understand it....

If you want the 360 to be backwards compatible you have to have the HDD. Games like Halo2 will not play without it. If you're going to buy one, the $399 on is the one to get. You'll lose out on all the best improvements if you buy the $299 one. I have also heard that the new games will be $59 instead of the traditional $49.

Also, if you buy the $399 version with the HDD, it comes preloaded with video, music, and demo type stuff (exact content has not yet been announced).

Remember when the PS2's first came out (for those old enough to recall). I bought my first one for around $350. That was with no hard drive, no network interface, no nothing basically. If you "have to have it" then pay the money and brag to your friends that you were one of the first. If you can wait, It will be down under $300 in about a year.

BTW, I'll be one of the ones bragging... "I have to have it".

(forever addicted to gaming... even at 39 yrs old)

So two different systems. I hope Microsoft knows what they are doing.

the cost of xbox 360 will only be an issue for a short ammount of time. the whole point of releasing xbox 360 this early with so few improvements is to try and get a jump on sales during the holidays before ps3 is released and becomes "the console to have".

as soon as ps3 is releaed in spring 06, xbox 360 is gonna drasticly drop in price in a further attempt to get as many sales as possible before ps3 corners the market and xbox stuff stops selling well.

Well, with next gen systems you wont need a harddrive to play current MMO's because of their onboard shared memory. The only reason FFXI on PS2 has a hard drive is for safetly. If to many textures and whatnot try to get rendered, you will run out of memory. Since PS2 is all shared memory, that basically means crash :), so to combat that problem, they put textures and stuff on a harddrive, so if they run out of memory they can just pull textures from the harddrive instead of trying to add them to the ram :)

Edit - Just forgot, you may need Hard drive just for updates though :( unless they figure out a way to put the updates on memcards or something

Yea...., hey thornn :)

The thing I find amusing about the new xBox is the MCE extender. xBox one MS bulds all this complex hardware protection in to make sure that only code they approve runs. Naturally the Linux geeks crack it so that they can put linux one and rub MS's face in it. After the box is cracked what does everyone start doing? xBox Media Center. Suddenly MS has the briliant idea of using the new xBox to play videos!
