World of Warcraft was okay. Solid graphics, decent gameplay. Given my history here I took a completely backwards tactic - I played a Rogue (straight dd instead of heals) and refused to be a leader.
Despite my best intentions, over two years I wound up officering for four different end-game guilds.
I came in as a second-wave WoW player; Karazhan was hot stuff when I was new. My teams beat KZ, took down Gruul's Lair and Magtheridon's Lair, trashed Serpentshrine Cavern, the Eye, Black Temple, Mount Hyjal. WoW released Zul'Aman and I put together a 10-man team that could do the four timed chests long before the nerf patches rolled in.
Wrath of the Lich King came out. Blizz upped the level cap from 70 to 80, so we all rushed to max level. We dug into Northrend content, trashing Naxxramas 10 & 25, pulling down achievements left and right. We beat Malygos in the Eye of Eternity. We went down to stomp Sartharion and his three buddies. I pulled down my guild's first Twilight Drake mount and proceeded to ride it everywhere.
I had the top-rated Rogue on my server for both gear and achievements. WoW gave me its best and I stomped on its balls.
Ulduar was on the horizon and I had been doing extensive testing on the PTR to prep for the inevitable content rush. I had a ton of WWS data up and was planning min/max'd skill trees for upcoming content changes. Everything was going according to plan.
And then one day, I signed in and couldn't stand the sight of the place.
I quit WoW over the summer.
I took a few deep breaths and realized I felt surprisingly good. I'd put up with a lot of frustrating nights in WoW due to the inferior class of gamer that environment seems to cater to. I had become desperately bored; I was always looking forward to the next challenges because nothing current held my interest at all.
Do you know why?
Because 25-man content is weak sauce once you've done Dynamis.
I dabbled with EVE for a little bit because the emptiness of that game provides a strange kind of solace. Unfortunately EVE hasn't changed much over the years. It remains a very pretty chat room. Boring.
I picked up an XBOX 360 and PS3, then worked my way through several of the good console games I'd been missing.
Then last night... I found myself what all was going on back in Final Fantasy, the best MMO I'd ever played.
I found there was a 14-day free trial available for download.
Much as Dragonball became Dragonball Z for it's second season, you may now see a tiny WingchildZ bouncing around Windurst trying to remember where the **** the mog house is. If you're in the neighborhood, and remember the old times, send a /wave.
