The tone of the forum is one of rememberance. Surely there are people left who remember the months of fun I had messing with my favorite Carby scrubs.

YES, dear forum readers, quite a few of us live on ... though most who've left Vana'diel were destined not to return.

I apologize for missing my yearly update of the Crafting thread. As there were only five posts there between '07 and '08, I guess it wasn't a big deal. ^^

So what the heck happened to Wingy?
After leaving Vana'diel in 2006, I changed jobs twice and moved both times. I used to be a Maryland gamer, but spent some time down in sunny Tampa, FL, and have since landed in Charlotte, NC.

I played a variety of games in the interim, including getting re-acquainted with EVE Online. While I was in Tampa, though, some well-meaning fool convinced me that his guild in WoW was the one guild on the planet that actually needed a Rogue. We had a core of players that all worked in the same shop. I figured what the ****, it's more fun talking game stuff during the day than work stuff, so I joined up.

I liked it. Turns out that punishing Allies for existing is very much in line with my personal philosophy.

Ooh, wingy in a guild. Uh oh.
mmhm. Players that remember me know what happens when I'm guilded. I made Officer, then took over.

The group I joined was social, but within a month or so I had them starting the baby 10-man raids. I ramped them up for 25-man content, kept them focused, kept them motivated.. but the energy started to play out as they got into Gruul and Magtheridon (baby 25-man stuff). The original officers were giving the speech every LS lead has heard a billion times, about how the guild "just doesn't feel the same" and how "the game isn't fun anymore" and blah blah whine whine whine. Seriously, what a bunch of wimps. I spent a lot of time laughing to myself while trying to figure out why these people couldn't handle simple 25-mans when I'd spent years running Dynamis with 63 other players. These guys would die in Final Fantasy.

I bailed, changed guilds, and wound up in the #4 Horde guild on my server. I made officer (uh oh) and took over as Rogue class lead. We ran through Tier-5 25-man content (TK, SSC), blitzed into Tier-6 (Mt. Hyjal, Black Temple), and were cruising along fine.. until we hit a boss that actually required intelligence on the part of every raid member. **** it.[/i]

The guild stalled, suffered defections, officers /gquit, you name it. Take away easy mode and people freak right the **** out. I wound up bailing from there and changing servers in the hopes of greener pastures. Following recent patches that completely nerfed existing content, I hear my old guild finally beat the boss that they were stuck on. I'd have felt congratulatory if everybody's damage wasn't around 2x what it used to be. blah. Kids these days. :)

So now I'm stalking around a new server, guildless, waiting for the new expansion to be released tomorrow. Part of the problem with me and guilds is that I'm very picky about what leadership I accept. It comes from having run one of the most entertaining and successful 'social' guilds on Carby. I miss Kalm and all it's people - it's been impossible for me to enjoy another guild since.

The sick part is, as much as I've resisted it, I feel like I'm being drawn back into a place where I need to lead to be happy. Ah well. There are worse fates than being a benevolent tyrant for a living.

Does wingy miss his carby peoples?
Of course. It's a shame none of us found a better way to stay in touch. (I'd hoped for Kalm to be a cross-game social group, and to an extent we managed it, but the 100-person Carby set, while sustainable, wasn't enough to expand and conquer other games. People fractured out and got re-absorbed by other gaming units.

So it goes.

So, to sum up

- Bacon is good
- Pergo has a special room in ****
- and omg hi 2 u :)

Wingy !!!

Funny things, TC quit, and I now own his account. Payback I guess.

I figured you'd be one to play WoW. I play, casually, too.

Good to see you again^^

heh, well, I considered necro-bumping some of my favorite threads, but I figured nobody would read 'em anyway, so passed. :)

The new WoW expansion is pretty hot stuff. One of the leveling zones had a twelve part quest chain that culminates in the following;

- death of a pair of NPCS
- permanent changes to parts of the game world (only visible to players who have completed the quest line)
- a betrayal by NPC members of one of the player races
- an invasion of a player capital city by both Horde and Alliance forces

This comes complete with awesome cutscenes that feature dragons raining down fire from the sky. Reminded me a lot of the awesome cutscenes FFXI had in place years ago. It's nice to see WoW is catching up.

Though, cool as the new expansion is, the game has officially been on EZMODE since the pre-launch patch went through. They upped the level cap from 70 to 80, and after a few days of casual play I'm at 77 thinking that this is going to be way too quick.

I guess they really want me to go back and try the new hero class (Death Knights, overpowered in the extreme from the sound of it).

ah well.

An amusing aside about WoW. While I have rolled up priests, shammys, and druids, I've pretty much avoided healing roles. My druid is a Restoration spec, so he's a healer .. but he's nowhere near as dynamic as my Taru was. Nor is he as cute.

Despite the time I've spent in WoW, I've mostly played my Rogue. Pure DD. I don't heal parties, I don't heal raids, and I try not to GM (but keep winding up an officer and challenging authority anyway). Maybe I got my best MMO gaming years out during my trip through Final Fantasy. :)

In another five years I'll probably retire to EVE Online to gank players and yell LOLNUUUUUUUUUUUB on the main chat channels.

I tried WoW, got to endgame, got bored of it, quit. I was waiting to see if WotLK improved the game and was planning on coming back but once I heard that the level cap was increased AGAIN and the high end purples were invalidated by trivial quest greens and blues AGAIN, that pretty much told me all the reason I needed to not come back to it :) I guess different strokes for different folks. I played Rogue and Mage and had some fun on both but FFXI still has me addicted.

Wb sir. :)

Benevolent tyrant? Do you mean a benevolent dictator or do you mean someone who is alternatingly benevolent and then other times a tyrant? Or maybe someone who is benevolent to some and tyranical to others?

Quite honestly I've found online gaming to be sort of like RL--if you continue to take all or most of your friends with you from one phase of your gaming/life to the next, you spend inordinate amount of times on social maintenance with existing personalities instead of expanding your social experiences with new personalities.

That doesn't mean you don't keep a couple of good friends here are there from one life phase to the next, but I think keeping it within reason is the wise thing to do.

It doesn't look like anyone I know plays anymore. The topic sort of saddened me lol I really thought... you know... perhaps... it finally happened ^^

I doubt anyone remembers me, except potentially Snoochy there.

I left FFXI without telling anyone, tired of it all and entirely bored of all the drama. I started playing right after NA release, and I liked the friendships I made far more than all the NM camping, end-game monotony. That seemed to not be a priority for most by the time I left.

Pecado, if you remember him, is now with someone else. He decided my arm would look better with a knife hole in it, and made it so. I'm with someone else, too. Life's an odd thing.

I miss the people I met online, and wonder if I'm ever going to talk to any of you again?

Cheers, and good luck in all you do.

Wow, I didn't even know this thread existed lol

Wing, you always were a troublemaker :-P I guess that why I liked making your life a living ****! But I think the thing I disliked the most was that you played nice to everyone unless you really wanted something; and then you talked down on them to get everyone to side with you. After all, who WOULDN'T agree with the guy that was super nice to them? Ah, politics...

But I guess I get the last laugh these days. After being a hardcore FFXI player, i figured instead of play games like this and give money away to people who made such a simple concept, I would go off and study the art of making games from the groundwork. So now, i'm a programmer in the games industry, meeting many of the people that make the games you play. And I guess the best part is, I probably have the satisfaction of knowing that you have definitely played one of my games :-)

Although I have worked on iPhone games, my main focus is console development, specifically on the 360 and PS3. Thanks for your guess though!

I'm glad you asked. She's not doing too well these day... getting very old, constantly having issues skin cancer, bladder cancer, and her mild MS that keeps her from getting around much. I'm fairly glad you **** didn't give her a heart attack though; I would have made sure you never saw the light of day again had you done that.

The best thing about checking in annually is seeing this thread sitting at the top of the Carbuncle forum. More a testament to the decay of the game and people's individual ego-surfing than anything, but hey. As far as threads go, c'est la mort; c'est la vie. =)

If you stop back here, Pally, I appreciate the analysis. I know the 20-something version of me wasn't universally loved, but I didn't often get to hear the reasons. People have a tendency to dissemble -- trying to spare people's feelings, trying to hurt them more -- unvarnished truth is hard to come by. It's a truth about you and I from years ago, granted, but I still find value in it.

I'm glad to hear you're doing something you like, and I hope your time in the gaming industry is treating you well. I hear it can be a pretty rough at times. Ideally the good outweighs the not-so-good.

And howdy to anybody else stopping by the ancient necro-post. This **** was old when I wrote it years back. Time hasn't improved it. ( ")b

Hello all. Adrenry 75 BLM here, played from 2003-6. I remember Krysti the blm taru taru of course :) Palidor I remember partying with you before, the elvaan paladin if i remember right? And wingchild, i dont think we knew each other but I believe I remember seeing you in game, taru taru right? Its been quite awhile, ive thought about coming back a few times but I dont have my character anymore so I never quite convinced myself to start all over, haha. I have a character named Adrenry on the Selbina serve of XIV however Ive only played a few months and havent played sense. Its decent but I think it was released way too early. It looks like theyre going to do alot over the next year so maybe I'll pick it up again when the ps3 version is released.I played Aion for awhile too, it was pretty fun but no XI. Anyways i hope you all have been well and hopefully someone is still actually playing to represent the old timer carbuncles :P

edit: thanks for mentioning pergo XD

Thongsy here. Most of you probably won't remember or know who I was. I played on and off from 03-06, then a month in 08 and 10 and I'm actually just restarted again. I remember aadrenry, was in the first LS I joined, LoX. Helped escort me to Jeuno and killed a walking tree along the way too. I remember Krysti too. And though I may not have party with many of the others if at all, I do recognize the many of the names. I have tried a couple of other mmos but none are the same, not even FFXIV. Which I have the same name there as on FFXI, formerly Selbina server which is now Ridill. I'll give that another shot when 2.0 hits and hopefully see some of you guys there.
