MY computer is ******* I can't get Windows to start. Has anyone experienced the following or similar issues while trying to either:
a) install FFXI on your PC
b) install the 2008 Vana Diel Collection on your PC
c) update FFXI for either a or b
I get an error message to start it in safe mode, normal mode, last known working settings, etc.
I also get a blue screen for a split second which goes away and takes me to the error screen.

While on the phone with HP support I have:
a) removed the battery and drained the power (held power button 30+ secs)
b) removed memory (both of them)
c) removed Hard Drive
d) Run Diagnostic (no errors)
e) run recovery from CD (completed successfully, though when option to restart appears, same error appears)
HP suggests that recovery CD is corrupt and to buy a new one.
Only option I know of is to reformat entire computer thus losing everything on it.
Can I do something to preserve everything on PC? Can I remove hard drive and put somewhere else to backup files?
Can I do something on my laptop without accessing Windows?
If I can preserve those files I'll reformat in a heartbeat.
Or any other suggestions or info you have.

u can buy an external usb hardrive unit where u can put your hard drive into it, it usually runs about 25+ you will need to make sure it is for a 2.5 inch hard drive though.
least this way you can grab the files you need or want to save on another pc.
then hook it all up and do a full wipe type recovery.

I thought of this actually, and I actually have an external. How can I find if my laptop has the right size? By the time you respond I'll probably have explored whether it works or not, but the responses are always appreciated in a time of desperation. :D
is it an external case? thats what i meant to say but the words escaped me. a regular ext. hard drive will not work unfortunatly :(

Yea, it's an external case. It was the right size, but the laptop HD's casing I had to bend a little to get in there. The computer did not recognize the laptops HD as having anything on it.
Maybe I'm totally out of date with this but...
You can reinstall windows w/o format, and have access to your old files in your new windows copy, install a burn disc program or connect to another pc and back up your files.
That is the cheapest way, about the external case you need a 2.5in as typongtive said, but I'm wondering since that blue screen is only one of 2 posibilities, your RAM is failing or your HD is failing, what I mean is even if you back up and format again it doesn't warrant that you lap will work fine after that.
