Man dies after online game marathon

Tuesday, August 9, 2005; Posted: 7:02 a.m. EDT (11:02 GMT)

SEOUL, South Korea (Reuters) -- A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing online battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play on-line games on August 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.

South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.

stupid *** people like to use this as an anti-video game arguement. ive read/heard that story so many times

I saw this up on the main forum last night.

It's VERY unlikely that playing the video game was what killed him. As someone on the boards said, the guy was probably chugging Amp and taking uppers to stay awake and play; it's possible he was really out of shape, or had a bad heart.

Playing video games, even for 50 hours, won't kill a healthy person. ^^

This may be propaganda in Seoul to warn people against video games, or it may be a scare story from the Reuters/AP people because they have nothing better to do.

If it is true, I really think there's more to the story than this :x

He must have had heart problems. Like Sioux said, "Playing video games, even for 50 hours, won't kill a healthy person."

Well I would imagine kittens are being killed every NEW game session you start. So this guy really WAS thinking of the kittens, having the same game session going 50 hours. :3

But really, dying after 50 hours of gaming? Amateur. I sincerely doubt he'd die of exhaustion after two days of being awake, regardless of the circumstances. The body is nowhere near exhaustion at that point, something I can attest to first hand.

There's definitely something else that caused him to die, not just stress, exhaustion, or what-have-you.

The next news report will be "We forgot to mention he was shot in the head" or something similar.

I can confirm what Aleuce (heh from another thread ~.^) says I went from 41 to 50 in a 53 hour non stop gaming sesion and I'm a fat *** who drinks booze, smokes cigarettes and eats greasy cheese burgers (Man I got these cheese burgers!) so yeah he must have been doing some sort of drug or had some sort of stress related heart condition.

Or maybe durring one of his naps a ninja.. yeah a ninja came in and hit him with a poison needle using a blow gun or maybe... maybe he wasn't really playing video games maybe he was comunicating with aliens and he.. and he knew too much and the goverment came and they... and they killed him all 007 style with a martini (shaken not stired)

Well what ever the reason be it a stress related heart condition , ninja's or Goverment sponsored Martini assassins...
I can asure you it was not from staying awake for a mere 50 hours I mean come on {Sweet William} he took naps on a bed... amature could not even fall asleep on his keyboard like the rest of us addicts. Another thing... Who the hell lets a man bring his own bed into a damn internet cafe?

He probably wasn't in a good shade before the 50 hours of long gaming. Those who have been playing video game with a rediculous long hours perday.

Why did he stay up for 50 hours with little to no sleep? Because he was addicted to the game.

Why did he take drugs so he can stay up? (If it's true because that's what some people are guessing.) Because he was addicted to the game.

If this man had say "No" to each of choice up there, he won't be dead by now. Why didn't he choose "Not to" even in his conscious mind? Because he was addicted to the game.

It isn't matter of how it killed him. It was matter of why he did this which result in killing him. So yes, It was the addiction of the game that killed him. Addiction on a video game is just as deadly as drugs if it's out of control. Even to a 28 years old grown man make such an mistake in his conscious mind and get himself killed.

I would also guess there might be something happened in his raid party before heart stroke took his life. It could be a moment of anger which caused the heart stroke after 50 hours of playing when he was already in a really bad shade.

I think most people still remember the thread awhile back with a link of a conversation between two men arguing over an ingame item. Which one of them has entered a very angry state over something called "Cloudsongs" in WoW. Threaten to kill the other man. Well IMO, I think anyone that plays over 10 hours per day on a video game regularly will really take any in game properties very seriously. This man can't be exceptional, who plays for 50 hours none stop probably because he was looking for something to accomplish or to obtain as motivation. And maybe, just maybe by any chance at the end before he dies, One of the item he want dropped, and by chance he lost the random to it or someone took it by cheating on him. He thought he was the most rightful person getting it out of everyone who was there. His anger overwelming his emotion. His heart start beating faster and faster after 50 hours of working and no rest, it finally broke down, dead. Which killed him instantly. No questions ask, no shout for help. . .

This is just my point of view that could probably be the cause, but it doesn't mean it's the truth.
