I have just managed to start the update. Took a few goes but not too bad compared to last time. But it says it is going to take 4+ hours!

How long is your update taking / did it take?

BTW I am on a broadband connection.

Mine won't move from 1hour 12 minutes. It's 22% done on Step 2.

I'm expecting it to take a long time, so I'm not gonna worry about getting on anytime soon.

I got to 20% before getting a POL-1160 error. The time remaining was a little over two hours.

I got to 87% and 93% on 2 consecutive downloads when the server decided not to give me any more files and to delete the ones that I had already downloaded....

I talked to a GM and he told me this was "so others can download the update." So now it's back to step 1.

It is because they are under DDoS attack.

Quote:
This is a follow-up to the previous news regarding congestion issues with the version update occurring since Jul. 19, 2005 2:00 (PDT).

We have confirmed that there is a continuous DDoS attack underway which has hampered our efforts and slowed the recovery process.
Our technicans are still investigating the issue and considering all possible options to bring this matter to a speedy resolution.

If you continue to have errors during the version update, please wait a while and try again later.

We deeply apologize for the inconvenience.

Denial of Service - what it means is someone is spamming and attacking the POL and FFXI routers to take them offline by flooding the channels with traffic.

Odds are that some of the traffic is legit - I know I kept hitting retry yesterday for about 25 minutes before I finally got online with POL, then about 30 more minutes just to get attached to Bismarck (and start the round of "POL-0006 errors while trying to download).

Just FYI... there are servers that have smaller populations (I've got a character on one of them) and it's a little bit easier to get the update from those servers. After trying to download from Bismarck for over an hour, I thought "doh! go to the other server!" It worked, I got my update.

Good Luck!
