Well to my suprise I hear that 7UP has come out with another contest. I know who cares about 7UP and their contests but then i hear the grand prise is a FREE trip to OUTER SPACE.
I was shocked, stuned and in compleat disbelieff when i heard this so i went to 7UP.com and checked it out and its true.

I'm just wondering what everyone thinks about this.

On a side note i think it would be cool to get a free trip to space just so i can say ya i been there lol

do you remember the contest a while back when 7up sis the points on caps where the grand prize was a USMC Harrier, the guy had to sue 7up and eventually got the "market value" because the United States Marine Corps would not sell them a Harrier.....? well i'm thinking along these lines again. and yes i do know that there has been a commecial flight into space now, that was so ridiculously expensive, that i dont think 7up can even spend that kind of cash w/o liquidating all of its assets.

Guys,

Don't get too excited about this. According to the Official rules of the game (Found at http://www.7up.com):

"Grand Prize: 1) Winner and guest will travel to the "Announcement Ceremony" event to be determined by Sponsor, which will take place no earlier than October 1, 2005. Trip will consist of two (2) round trip coach-class air transportation from a major U.S. gateway airport nearest winner's residence, standard hotel accommodations (one room), and a daily meal allowance to be determined by Sponsor. 2) One (1) ticket on one of the first ten commercial seats to sub-orbital space offered by the winner of the ANSARI X PRIZE or its affiliates ("Commercial Operator") at a time and location to be determined by the Commercial Operator. Actual trip details are contingent upon final itinerary established by the Commercial Operator. Prize includes roundtrip coach air transportation for two (2) between the major U.S. gateway airport nearest Grand Prize Winner's residence and the major U.S. gateway nearest the point of departure of the sub-orbital space flight, standard hotel accommodations (one room), a daily meal allowance (amount to be determined by Sponsor), and $100,000 cash to be awarded to the Grand Prize Winner following completion of space flight which may be put towards payment of taxes. ARV of entire Grand Prize package: $305,000. "

Please note the word "SUB-ORBITAL", which probably means this is just one of those flights where they take a 747 and fly it high enough to start 'plummeting maneuver', where the passengers experience a zero-gravity feeling, as if you were in space. Also note the ARV (approximate Retail Value) of the prize. You think it only costs you 300k to go into orbit?

So... don't expect to be taking pictures of earth from the moon just yet.

Just call me your bubble buster of the day... ;;

even if the prize was real.... do you have any idea what kind of training it takes to go to outer space ? XD

not that much training. One of the big names in vegas is already well underway on building his orbital hotel, and has put forward a 1 million dollar prize to the first corporation which can successfully put a transport made for commercial use into space twice in one month for a certain price, I forget what. You only need a lot of training to operate the various things on the shuttle.

In one of my National Geographic's hey had an article about the Virgin spaceship.

The guy who owns Virging spent billions to create a flight to leave the atmopsphere and it requires NO training.

They have to have a plane bring the spaceship up to save on fuel though, so dont expect to have the traditional blast-off

Actually, I think it was Pepsi, not 7-Up, and what happened was that the company was not required to provide even market value because the jet was only in the commercial, not the official list of prizes you could receive, and it wasn't reasonable to actually expect a fighter jet. Unless I'm greatly mistaken.

Just a side-note there.

Yep. Virgin & another company are in a race to finish the first commercial sub-orbital planes. If you look enough, I'm sure you can find more info about them (I'm too tired from work to look).

I bet whoever wins this will be on one of the first trips in those planes. If it were up to me I would wait a few years till they iron out the bugs with them. Kinda like buying a car in the first production year - not a good idea. ^^
