I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be a "one-click" way to get to your PMs unless you have a new message...without a new message, you have to click on "preferences" and then "my messages" and then "inbox". Maybe in the sidebar with the links to "preferences" and the journal there should be a link to one's inbox?
Now sure which skin you are using, but n the Wow skin, you can just look in the upper right hand corner (on the header image. Next to the name should be a link to your PM box.

Both the wow and lotr skins do that. More to follow.

Okay, cool. I've been using the general Alla skin since the EQ2 skin went putrid.
You could always click on "You have no unread messages." at the top of each forum. That's how I do it now.

D'oh. Somehow I never noticed that link there.
