Woman dies after son calls 911; dispatchers think it's a prank

(Update: Detroit, April 7, 2006, 12:24 p.m.) An investigation is underway in Detroit after a six-year-old boy called 911 to get help for his mom, and the operator acted as if it were a joke.

Detroit NBC Affiliate WDIV reports that six-year-old Robert Turner called 911 on February 20. He thought his mother, 46-year-old Sherel Turner, had passed out. She was later found dead.

911 tapes detail the call, where the boy tells a female operator that his mom had passed out. The operator demands to speak to an adult before sending police.

The boy eventually hung up and called back a short time later. This time, the same operator warns the boy that he could get in trouble for making a prank call to 911. The boy said police didn't arrive until three hours later and found his mother dead.

The family is now pursuing a lawsuit.

Officials said the 911 operator will be disciplined, but because of her years of service she will not be fired.

Police continue to investigate.

And this lady isn't going to be fired? She needs her *** kicked.

She should be fired. We teach our children to dial 911 for emergencies and when they do someone dies because the adult on the other line is a douche.

i agree, she should go to jail for neglegent (sp?) homocide. that is murder by failing to do her job.

The woman is problably not good enough for her job, just fire her.

Throwing her in jail (especially for murder) is way out of bounds. She made a fatal error at her work but she didn't do this at purpose.
While you can prosecute her for making an error leading to death, she prolly won't end up in jail.

Since the familly is going to sue the operater, but can expect much problems. Especially since this America.

it's too bad there isn;t something that they could do to constantly remind her of her fatal error like they do with drunk drivers having to do stuff ont he anniversary of the death of their victim.

I'd fire her then throw her retarded *** in jail, i bet hundreds of people have died by her hand, thinking every call is a damn joke. What a stupid *****.

Oh man if that happen to my little brother and mom, I would be whooping a$$ and taking names.

No matter how long she has worked there, she should be fired. That is gross negligence that could be the cause of a persons death. Even if the mother had died when she colapsed, she left a child calling for help, there is no reason for that.

If sending immediate help could of saved the mothers life, I could see jail time, but that may be harder to prove.

I am just glad the 911 operators here takes calls more seriously. When my little sisters pranked 911 there were 2 cops at the house in 5 minutes to check up on things.

i think in most places when 911 is called cops show up whether it was accidental or not.
i remember hearing about this guy called 911 instead of 411,said he had meant to call 411 then he left his house, and left his door unlocked, then the cops showed up, went inside thinking there could be a problem and found a bunch of pot plants

I have worked at the AMK Sentral (911 operator, for the non-Norwegians in the crowd) myself for seven months before I found my current job. If the story here is true, the woman should be fired, and fined, because that was gross negligence and breach of protocol. Almost any country in the world got rules and regulations for emergency service operators, and those are pretty much the same whatever country you are in. One of the regulations state that even if the call is obviously a prank call, it will still have to be logged, and reported, and investigated by appropriate personell. In this case the police. She obviously neglected to report this to the police, and hence the little boy was left alone with his dead/unconscious mother. The reason for this regulation is that even when it is a prank call, the caller must be identified and informed of the seriousness of an Emergency Service Central.

I know work as an Emergency Team Leader (Fire and Ambulance services) for a private company at a location where the state emergency services cannot have a reasonable response time, but I still teach those under me the importance and seriousness of AMK (again, 911 for the non-Norwegians) because of the professional help you can expect to recieve.

In my country, you better be doing a good job when working as an emergency operator, or you will quickly be fired, and if you commit gross negligence, you will also be fined heavily.

Wow, sad story.

Mabey this will result in the nation wide plan that says the police will come even if its a prank, or a child, ect.

Heard she died, and this 5 yr old was with his mom (deceased mom) for like 3 hrs till he called again and the cops showed up.

The least the operater deserves is to be fired... but that does not seem togh enough IMO.

Sad waste of life, the poor kid will be scarred for life. I cannot imagine his fear, panick and helpessness in that tsituation. I would sue her civaly for neglect resulting in death, the city also...

Sad, sad story indeed.

That is already the regular procedure for this type of situation. The operator seriously neglected to do her job in this case. Total procedure failure.

LMFAO... I would wonder how anyone could dial 911 accidently if they meant 411.

Hmmm...

Natural response IS she should be fired. But I'm going to play the devil's advocate for a second here from what I heard in the log.

Here's part of the transcript I am going to source my idea from

Quote:
911 Operator: "Let me speak to her before I send the police over there."

"I tried to tell them she wouldn't talk," said Robert.

Robert: (Inaudible)

911 Operator: "I don't care. You shouldn't be playing on the phone. Now put her on the phone before I send the police out there to knock on the door and you gonna be in trouble."

It looks to me like the 911 operator might know the house the boy is calling from. Could the same operator know the young boy without him knowing her? It's possible, but highly unlikely IMO. But when you actually hear what is being said during this, the 911 operator does SOUND like she knows the boy's family or the sort.

Doesn't matter in the end though, the 911 operator should be fired for not following protocol. Being in the business so long, she should of remembered that it is her job to send SOMEONE to any house even if it could just be considered a fake to just "investigate". I know where I've lived (Georgia and Arizona), it has been a misdeamenor (sp?) at least to call 911 with a prank.

this happens alot on base because to dial an outside line they have to use 9 so if they are calling out of the area code they have to press 1... it happens..

Wow, that sucks. The lady should have been fired.

And on a somewhat related note, here is a link to a Boston newspaper website describing the type of 911 phone calls made in Massachussetts:
