Thanks to some idiot at work breaking Firefox, TVTropes is one of the few sites I can entertain myself browsing that isn't blocked by Websense.

I actually have remote access to another computer via Gotomypc for work purposes that's off the proxy(because it has to be to run the required program I'm using it for) that I can use to browse other sites, so it's not like I'm completely blocked off. It's just slow and annoying, so I spend most of my time on a forum for a tabletop RPG and TVTropes.

I just wish I could get rid of the corrupted parts of the current Firefox install so I could run it off of a USB drive, but we lack admin privileges. Which is how it got broken in the first place. Dude clicked "Install anyway" after being warned he lacked admin privileges during an update, which left it corrupted somehow. I'm really not sure, exactly. But now it crashes every time you try to start it.

For the same reason Joph wants to argue with Gbaji, Alma an formerly Varus. It's either that or work.

That's fine. There's a big difference between "I'm so bored, I'll read this" and "LOL I'm lost in the TvTropes vortex now I'll never get any work done! HAHA!! Call Child Protective Services, my toddler's been stewing his own feces for three days as I read about Powered Princess Catgirls but I can't help it LOLOL!!"

The latter is the usual reaction to the site. Not just here but all over the web.

I never understood the fascination with that site. I visited it once, looked around for a couple minutes and haven't been back. A bunch of people with entirely too much time on their hands overcatorgizing every single piece of media they can get their hands on just doesn't interest me.

It's not the categorization that interests me, it's the kind of cross-genre parallels. The general trope is what is far more entertaining to learn about than every single media item it has ever been in.

I don't often browse through the actual games, novels, etc.

But I can start by learning about different portrayals of psychic powers, moving to Astral Projection, then end up on convenient coma, which lands me over on the Empty Shell.

It's not really any different from browsing through Wikipedia articles, except that these articles are limited to topics on media portrayals.

Or you could just play the Hitler game.

Use the random article feature, and see how many clicks it takes you to get to Hitler's wiki page.

Multiplayer mode - one player uses the random system, the other navigates to that page. Whoever reaches Hitler first, wins. And then you two start stockpiling weapons and insinuate murder every time you meet from then on.

I got sucked into the TVTropes vortex once. It really depends on if you hit on a string of articles that are interesting and/or wind up being about something you follow.
