DON'T LAZE ME, BRO!Follow

So I went to my local convenience store to buy beer just now.

When I showed my ID for proof of age (unusal - lol Bijou is olde), the clerk SCANNED THE DATA BLOCK ON THE BACK OF MY ID.

Is this normal? I've never seen it done before. Does this happen where you live?

That wasn't at all what I was expecting this to be about, but no, I've never had my license scanned.

I can't even remember the last time I've been asked for an ID. Probably because I tend to buy my booze at the same few places.

What I want to know is where in the world is there a town of under aged people who all look like they are 30+.
I've never had my I.D scanned, but I have had to show my I.D more in the last year then ever before. I see signs now at stores that read "If you look like you are under 30, we will I.D you."
I've been there when my parents, who are both in their 50s, have been I.D.

I work at a gas station and I always scan the backs. It's much quicker than typing in a birthday each time some college kid wants his/her smokes. Most people don't care, although I had one conspiracy-theorist guy lecture me for putting him at risk for identity theft.

I got carded by the cop that pulled me over the other day and my license was expired. I had no clue. I think that was the first time I'd had my license out of my wallet in over a year. No one asks me for it anymore.

Anyways, my new license with a bar code hasn't arrived yet. It should be here any day. I guess I have nothing to report on the ID scanning front.

I only buy wine, or people give it to me. I almost always buy it at a local wine/coffee shop where I know the guy that runs it.

I think I had mine scanned once for something, but generally no people don't bother. Also, it's better for the business to ID everyone who has any chance of being under the legal age limit as opposed to risking getting hit with fines or worse just because one kid happened to mature better than the rest of his peers.

I've had my license scanned a few times, but no one questions a military ID.

It's another way that businesses can verify age for lawsuit purposes, AND get free marketing data to see who buys what products with what alchohol without any complaints from consumers because it's all in the name of safety and legality, not some corporate scheme to make more money via marketing and then sell your personal info to data brokers so you end up with more targeted spam ads and junkmail.

**** Store Story: Our sign on the door read "STOP: If you look under the age of 99 prepare to show your I.D."

It more has to do with some old vagrancy laws that ND has. I mean if you look, and are 72.. I know you can buy your ****, but I needed to always make sure that a person just had ID, no scanning it or even reading the name... just show me a frigging State/Military ID with your photo on it and I was happy.

Many times though I got the "I'm old enough to be your grandfather!" remarcks, which I just then would ask them to prove it with an ID , becaue I was a jackass like that.

As for having mine scanned, there are few places that do that in Fargo, and as Tasera mentioned, its quicker to just scan the ID and then see the info, since every single damned state has their own messed ID's. I can attest that I hate finding someones birthdate on an out of state ID that I have no clue how to read.

I just pulled my ID out of my pocket, and went "hey, there is a bar code on the back," so I guess that would be a no. Smiley: rolleyes

The only place I usually show ID is along with the membership card at the zoo. Often there's an awkward couple of seconds while they stare at my card; the temporary sticker they gave when I changed addresses has worn down to the point you can't read my first name. I assume they're sitting there trying to decide whether or not it's worth hassling a guy with 2 toddlers over the suspicion he might be sneaking into the zoo. So far no one has said anything, but it's rather entertain to watch them sweat over it. Smiley: lol

My dad owns a sports bar. Due to weird local laws, in order to serve alcohol the patrons must be "members" of a "private club." In order to join said "private club," you just have to pay a "fee" of allowing the door guy to scan your ID. You just swipe your ID card, and if it doesn't read for some reason, the door guy manually enters in your license number / State / Expiration date.

Back where I went to college was a dry county, but the "private club" rule was also available for restaurants to be able to serve alcohol. Basically you just had to sign your name and get a membership card. Interestingly, there were a couple instances where people tried to push through a bill to allow all restaurants to serve alcohol instead of just the "private clubs", but one of the major opponents was the owner of 3 of said "private club" restaurants in town Smiley: tongue.

We were a wet campus to be sure. Just had to drive about 15 minutes to get to the nearest liquor store.
