#1 May 15 2009 at 8:51 AM Rating: Decent
I'd make a vote kinda thing but he has a lot of movies...

I busted out Modern Times because of a couple posts I made. I always tear up at the end when they start walking down the road.

This part gets me everytime.

Edit again: I take that back, when he gets all hopped on Cocaine is the best.

I like the one in which he doesn't talk for the whole film.

Modern Times or the Great Dictator. But City Lights is great too, though a little sad.

I <3 Chaplin.

I quite like the scene where where the flag drops off the back of a lorry and tries to give it to them.

And the one when he's working on the shipyard. there's something poetic about watching that boat go.

But yeah, the cocaine one is the funniest. Though the automatic-table-eating thing is pretty awesome too.

Philistine!

To be fair, I'm not sure I've ever seen anything by Jerry Lewis, or with Jerry Lewis in it, for more than 5 minutes. But still, you just can't compare the two Smiley: mad

Actually I was playing off an American stereotype that French people love Jerry Lewis.

I've never seen City Lights Smiley: frown I downloading it right now though.

The automatic eater was flipping awesome. I seriously mentally dedicate myself to watching Charlie Chaplin, it's exhausting to see all his little tics and preplanned movements that he does. The guy was genius but not only that he graceful in every movement he did.

I really like City Lights, it's beautiful and touching. But for me it doesn't have quite the same historical insights as either the Dictator or Modern Times. The latter especially, since the subject matter is not necessarily as well known. Modern Times is a great insight into the Great Depression, into life in the 30s, into the dreary abject mind-crushing work of the people in factories... Maybe it's the Commy in me, but it's better than any documentary to understand the spirit and the reality of the times.

The Dictator is bit the same, although it does go on a bit at the end. Still, considering it was made in 1940, before the US entered the war, before the atrocities of the ***** were known, it's quite extraordinary. Almost visionary. At the time it was made, he was denounced as a communist and hated by a lot of people for depicting Hitler like this and making this film.

So yeah, not really like Jerry Lewis.

Jerry Lewis is funny but it's really benign humor. The Nutty Professor is probably my favorite. If I want to see that kinda humor though I'd go for Buddy Hackett.

Eddie Cantor is still one of my favorites when it comes to the 30's era...

Con has the entire set on vhs. Mint. My fatherinlaw got it for him.

A CC moment I will never forget: My FIL was having an aneurysm in his brain removed. I was on Macaw Duty. Bowls pre made to serve. The Military Macaw adored me. The Hyacinth would break out of the room to kill me, whenever he heard my voice.

Then The African Grey. Almost lost fingers (keep in mind I had a bluefronted Amazon of my own).

Opened the family room door to feed the cockatiel and almost had a heart attack. It was the full sized cardboard standee black&white of CC behind a chair.

So birds and cardboard. I hate Charlie Chaplin now.

My kids call him Uncle Charlie bcz that is who my FIL told them he was.
