[POLL] Mystery MangoesFollow

#1 May 07 2009 at 5:13 AM Rating: Good
With being climate aware, I buy fruit and veggies by location, meaning 90% of the plant parts I buy are European, German/Polish if possible (This year's special: Cheap local asparagus Smiley: inlove).

So I was looking which more exotical fruit from Europe were available today 'cos a girl needs a bit of variety in her diet, and stumbled upon mangoes from Kent. At least it said they were from Kent. Now, normally they just label by country and not county, so it doesn't make sense to begin with, but I also never thought mangoes grew in England at all.

Where are the local supermarket's mangoes from?
Kent, England:2 (12.5%)
Kentucky, USA:1 (6.2%)
A tropical island nation Kali has never heard about:5 (31.2%)
Metropolis:4 (25.0%)
other/???:4 (25.0%)
Total:16

I don't know about you but I don't want anything to do with a mango and gore. Next thing you know, there's blood.

That's what I thought at first.

Still doesn't explain why they'd write "Kent" instead of "England" or "Großbritannien".

Also, why would they grow them in a greenhouse in the UK, just to ship them to Germany? That's ******** from an environmentalist POV. Well, so are French tomatoes, I guess. Smiley: lol

And I've never seen mangoes in a greenhouse hereabouts. Except maybe in the botanical gardens, I don't remember.

I get annoyed by the strings that get stuck between my teeth. Apart from that, yes, mangoes are lovely.

So what your saying is that eating a mango is like going down on a lady with a big hairy 80's Bush?

Damn man. Not only are you missing out on one of the greatest pleasures in life, but one that is so readily available to anyone who wants it.

When selecting a mango, the skin should be slightly yeilding. The most important factor is the smell. If you can't smell anything when you sniff the skin, it isn't ripe yet. If it's got black spots on it, it's over-ripe.

There is a very large pip in the middle, and the mango flesh has an almost unique way of clinging to the pip, close in to it. So you will have to shear through the flesh near the pip with a very sharp knife. Stuff it, Being shown how to cut around the pip will b much easier than me tryign to describe it. Near the end the guy turns the "cheek" inside out, to get a "hedgehog" of mango. He cuts those all off at teh base, to make mango cubes. You can skip the cutting bit, and just nibble off each mango segment from the hedgehog by mouth.

Really, I can't describe to you how fragrant and gorgeous a good mango tastes and smells.

I almost always eat them on their own, but ieces of them also go great in salads, or chicken salads.

You are eating far too close to the pip, then. Throw that bit to the chickens.
