Has anyone had cholesterol issues?

How would you explain good cholesterol vs. evil cholesterol to a slow 5 year old?

If you have had high cholesterol what did you do to lower it/balance it?

How "high" is "high cholesterol?"

I haven't had any cholesterol issues personally, but when talking to a child that age I would probably avoid some of the larger words and just talk about eating a healthy diet, especially fruits and vegetables.

If you have a problem with cholesterol your best bet is to discuss it with your doctor, since we're all different he might have different ideas for you to try and lower it, but more then likely it'll come back to eating healthy and exercising.

Yes.

Slap them with bacon and say its bad, then hit them with an egg and say its good. They may not eat breakfast any more, but that can only help in the learning process.

I am SUPPOSED to be on drugs, but ***** that I hate taking prescriptions. Eating healthier, Cheerios, Oatmeal, Some nuts will help as well, they don't have cholesterol in them but a similar compound that is helpful.

Anything over 200 should be lowered, anything over 240 is real bad, mine was well above that, I am still hovering around 230 though. You need to also make sure your LDL and HDL levels are within a good ratio of each other as well.

I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on tv. I haven't slept at a holiday inn express recently either.

Cholesterol numbers can be a little deceiving if you just go by the one base number.

If your total cholesterol is 200 and your good cholesterol is non existent then that is bad.

If your total cholesterol is 200 and your good cholesterol is high then that is OK.

Bear with me I am going to try to try to put into words how I would explain cholesterol to a 5 year old.

Your body is like a building, and your blood vessels are like the pipes that run thru the building and take blood to all the places of your body.

When you eat bad fatty foods it is like pouring grease into the pipes and it sticks to the inside walls of the pipes and can clog them and keep the blood from flowing where it needs to go.

When you exercise it creates good cholesterol and this is like pouring ball bearings into the pipes and when they travel thru the pipes they rub against the sides of them and break up the grease that is trying to clog the pipes and makes the blood flow good again.

So the moral to the story is to eat less grease and do more exercise even if it is just walking and your pipes will stay clean.

This is a vast over simplification but I think it does a good job of illustrating the point in a way a 5 year old could understand it.

Thanks guys. :)
I am the five year old child....

Yeah. I am kinda way kinda over 240. My doc kept saying, "You are only 34," over and over. I'm not a doctor, either, but I am pretty damn sure I am going to remember my age now (I'm 34,dont say that).

I have the levels in my liver elevated. I forgot to have her write those down for me.

Thursday is a chest ex-ray. In four weeks, a breathing test. I thought I had that down and no one EVER said there was gonna be a test. /glare

The biggest problem people have with their cholesterol is that they only concentrate on lowering their bad cholesterol when they should be raising their good cholesterol. It hasn't been an issue for me. My blood pressure, cholesterol, pulse, etc. hasn't changed since I was 16.

She is going to let me try to lower it on my own, for 3 months. Then I get smacked with a new med.

She was bent that my skin disorder didn't show up in my bloodwork. We know what I have, she said it could take years for it to pop up.

I'm under the impression that genetics can also play a role. My cholesterol has always been low as is my blood pressure (which while preggo with Suki and living off of chipotle made my OB's eyeballs spin.) I had a friend in college who worked out for an hour a day, ate pretty healthy and still had ****** cholesterol.

The paper work I got though had 180 as the upper range of good, so 180+ was time to see the doctor.

As for explaining it, I would ask myself if it is necessary. A five year old may be intellectually precocious but they are not emotionally developed enough to cope with Mommys health crisis. It might just be one of those things to either not tell him or hold off till he's in his preteens. However, knowing that you have issues with cholesterol may help out when you go for checkups, especially if it is something that runs in the family.

Browsing the web, the only example they have is how to explain it to a 10 year old.
http://thedietsolution-program.com/blog/explaining-cholesterol-to-a-10-year-old/

Just weigh the consequences and benefits:
1. Nomatter how well you explain it, will it upset him?
2. WIll it cause him anxiety due to worrying about Mommy?
3. How will it help him?

thats just my Smiley: twocents

Somebody green arrow Tyrrant, please. I did and his score dropped like I had red arrowed. The karma system is not working as intended. Dammit.

I'm sorry. It was probably my evil cholesterol. Where is Mr. GoodBody when you need him?!

Let's sing about the heart! "80 beats a minute. A Hundred and Sixteen Thousand Beats a Day!"

She kept asking if I had been drinking last night. Not even a glass of wine. I think she meant before my blood screen for my liver also?

Anna, my BP is usually so low I should be comatose. She took it 3 times bcz she couldn't believe how high it was, today. Lol she was muttering to herself while she was writing it down.

Heart disease runs on my mom's side. Not a single great aunt lived past the age of 64. Creepy.

My mom is on meds to help with her cholesterol. Now I am not usually superstitious, but Mom turns 64 in a week.

I kinda meant I was the child, but its actually really good information. Thank you. My kids will be able to better understand while we plan meals for the shopping list.

But, I don't. Smiley: frown
