I can't really fathom having a DVR. I'm usually all in favor of purpose built devices, but it's so trivially easy and cheap to record video on a PC that I really don't get that one. To me it would be like buying an actual purpose built word processing machine that exclusively provided that one function.
The convenience of having the scheduling come right off the cable box makes it worth the relatively small price IMO. Obviously, that doesn't always work when a program overruns or gets shifted at the last minute, but you'll have the same problem trying to record using any other method as well. I've dorked around with hooking a PC to my cable feed and recording that way, and while it works, it's not really much of an improvement over the old days of setting your VCR. Buggy and cumbersome. TIVO is essentially just a box that does that for you, with all the same problems. And honestly, if you're paying for a TIVO, why not just use a DVR?
Pulling feeds off the net works pretty well, and that's clearly the direction to go. It's just not quite there yet. There are a host of technical and legal reasons why this is so, but I've never seen the same quality and performance off a straight network feed as I've seen of a dedicated cable feed. As long as that remains the case, I'm perfectly ok with paying a few bucks a month to use a DVR.
