***** Varrus, think about how the rest of the Asylum is going to handle the OOT.

Oh with kid gloves, I assure you.

That aside, this is a foolish way to go about this process. While I understand the value of the veneer of consensus building and "involvement" of posters, it's a sham. Do what generates the most revenue for the site. Weighted by post count, the vast majority of the most involved people favor moderation in only the most extreme cases. It was the case when OOT was created from the Asylum, it's the case now, it'll be the case the next time there's head scratching about this. It's not rocket science, the most active posters, who drive the forums, which drives ad revenue, favor less moderation. It may be the case that the posters that complain or favor more moderation generate more income through Premium or whatever, I have no idea. Figure it out, though. Hire me for $2000 a day and I'll figure it out from your data since it seems such a mystery to you you guys. Once you've figured out which policy will generate the most revenue, DO THAT. It's a for profit enterprise, not a public trust. Pretending it isn't is just insulting.

Good luck.

I realize that I am late to to the poll but the OOT and Asylum are unique forums. I venture into the Asylum but doubt I would ever post there. It has nothing to do with the people, many of whom I like or respect, it has to do with the nature of the forum. The mayhem of the OOT is what was drew me here and prompted me to return. All the personalities play a role in my continued interest.

Don't you need to gently slap someone in the face with gloves and then challenge them to a duel when you say that?

Just because a select few people like to be complete ******** to other people doesn't mean we should merge =28 with =4. Threads that are extremely heated should be moved to =4, and posters who are being ********, not in a joking manner, need to realize that **** doesn't belong here.

I think the tricky bit there is deciding where to drse the line between joking replies, and serious replies - and a new poster on the oot, unless they've neem lurking a while, isn't likely to be able to make that distinction . From my point of view, there are certain posters I know enough to allow to take the **** out fo me - for example, Nobby . I've heard him on skype, singing, and I've read many of his posts on here. I like Nobby, and to some extent I know his posting, so he gets the right to call me names on skype, because I know how to take it . (Although, Many thanks to Gwynapnud for repeatedly standing up for me :P)

However, if someone I didn't know was to jump on the bandwagon on Fatalillusiontw is a fatty, then sure, I'd get pissed off. They haven't earned my respect, and therefore, they haven't earned the right to disrespect me . (I feel like an utter chav typing tht, innit, yanoarimean?)

The tricky part is deciding where to draw the line, and once thats decided, enforcing that line. Because either way, what we do need is admins who admin wisely - which means not dragging people out into public humiliation and starting drama in the first place . If this whole BT issue had been handled by the admins via PM, there wouldn't be this ********** I'm not intending to insult the admins, but I really think that, IF as was stated, they advised a poster to gripe about another poster in the ste feedback forum, that was a silly move .

The line has to be drawn first, before it can be overstepped. The person being taunted needs to make it clear that he doesn't appreciate it, and needs to tell the person to stop. Strike one. If it continues then the person being taunted needs to get an admin to tell the person to stop. Strike two. If the taunting continues then the line has been drawn and crossed and punishment should be handed out; strike three.

Or something like that.

I get you ^^ . I think the main think is to make rules that apply from this future point, and to make sure they ARE enforced. From what I gather, the OOT was originally formed because people were getting some flack from the asylumites, and this will repeat unless rules are made and stuck to, regardless of whether forums merge or not .

unfortunatly many newcomers seem to think that kind of behavior leads to them being accepted,,

Why is it that this topic comes up every 4-5 months but nothing ever comes of it?

BTW, I miss posting. They blocked Alla at work and that makes the days much longer.

I really don't get why the OOT and Asylum weren't merged already. Is the majority of what the OOT posts so crappy that it would drive away all the Asylum regulars? I see Joph, Nexa, Nadeau, Samira, Nobby, Red, Gbaji and a slew of other Asylumites posting in the OOT daily. So obviously they are somewhat interested in what we have to say.

I for one wouldn't mind seeing a politics thread /w a movie review by LobJon right below it and followed by Niobia baby thread or what have you.

I am too tired and WAY too stressed to write an official response at this time. And in no way would I allow anyone to pay Smash 2k a day for his babble. Smiley: grin

This is not an organized post, just posting the thoughts so I can log out, storms are here. I will spew what I can, but the storm may knock out my electricity at any time and I don't want to lose what I have typed!

It's amazing some of the ideas I read here and was sent. Some of them we have already considered, some where crap, but ultimately you decided to get along somewhat. I received some apologies, some suggestions a few, I don't care, do whatever notes. I read them all, however I have not had time to reply to them all, nor all the posts here.

It's not really THAT much of a pain to move a thread, but letting you come up with a solution gives you a voice, everyone likes to be heard, and have their ideas considered. We really have considered merging the two forums, because in reality, the original sandbox is dead and has outgrown itself. However, I think the "TV, Movies, Anime & Books" could be removed and those types of posts allowed back into the Sandbox.

Someone asked why I didn't make a poll in Asylum, because I already know their answer, I don't need to ask them.

We have a place for flames, cursing, and all around rowdiness, please utilize THAT forum for it's purpose. A few of you belong in the Asylum, if you aren't ready to move on, then rethink your posting style to accommodate those who come to OOT to chat without the fear of Asylumesque behaviors.

So, plan on seeing a LOT more of Kao, and don't be so quick to judge his behavior as strictly his own. He RARELY mutes or bans without letting me know in advance. If I feel strongly against it, we discuss options and come to a compromise. (elec flickered!)

So, from today forward, flamey THREADS will be moved from OOT to Asylum. If the OP protests, they can come to me via whatever means they have to contact me. We'll discuss it.

Flamey posts will either be rated into oblivion/nuked or edited. Continued misuse of the OOT MAY eventually result in a mute or a ban depending on the severity.

Crap I gotta go. Discuss. Leave comments, questions etc. WE CAN work this out and make MOST of you remotely happy. I will be back after the storm subsides unless I crash first, which is possible.

Thanks for all your honest opinions and behaving so well in this thread so that I could actually consider different options/sides to the arguements.

I picked "leave the current options". The first option sounds to me like reinventing the wheel and I think you'd end up with the same people in the "newbie area" where it's safe and the same people in the Asylum after a readjustment period. Basically, we have enough options available to those who choose to post appropriately. I would say stepping up the thread moving might be a good way to demonstrate to those in the OOT what is and what is not appropriate for this particular forum. I think folks will get mighty annoyed, but since there seems to be an issue of clarity on what exactly is acceptable in this forum that may be the best way to get the point across.

TLDR

This is almost exactly what I was going to say but Nexa said it better.

You can't just create a forum and let it grow one way, then a few years later tell everyone to shut the show down and move somewhere that they will have to change. The only reasonable thing to do is start a new forum and nip any behavior you don't approve of in the bud.

There's no reason to create another forum. All that needs to be done is the rules need to be followed through with discipline. Plain and simple. Merging won't do anything. Creating a new forum won't do anything.

The problem is that OOT slowly tested its limits and bent and stretched the rules. Some bans and mutes along the way but that's what happened. It wasn't overnight and now the camel is bum humping your daughter in a double stuffed sleeping bag.

So basically you're saying it was lazy moderation that led to this, and now the community should be punished?

So the solution is to create a third forum that will doubtless suffer the same issues as the current OoT has over time? Do we then make a fourth forum for the super emotionally fragile?
