Do you need new tunes?Follow

#1 Apr 24 2009 at 9:25 AM Rating: Good
I do. This tends to happen to me every few months. I listen to the same stuff, over and over again, until I'm so sick of it I'm ready to throw my iPod out the window. Perhaps I don't pay attention to enough New Releases coming out, or I simply have too narrow a scope of music I'll listen to that it forces me to wait for the few bands I enjoy to release new material.

Anyone have an recommendations based on my interests? (Feel free to post the same in search for new stuff as well):

Genre: Hard Rock to Doom/Black/Death Metal. I'm interested in more hybrid types of metal that merge heavy melodies with aggressive instrumentation. Bands like: All That Remains, Dead To Fall, In Flames, Killswitch Engage, Haste The Day, Taproot, etc. Can't stand the "kiddie" metal like Linkin Park and all that crap.

Any suggestions? I've been listening to the same iPod playlist for the last 3 months and I'm ready to burst!

I don't care if you like it or not, but this song has been stuck in my head for a few days. This video is really ******, but the track I got from iTunes kicks ***.

This has been stuck in my head .

When I visited my boyfriend, he played it in his car as we drove down the seafront , and it made me think of some kind of drunken demented mosquito buzzing around. As I hate mosquitoes with a passion, this bugged me, and I found myself humming the song all the way home on the train . Now, I actually like the track, although it's vastly different from my usual musical tastes . This is a shorter version of the track, the full one is about 5 minutes long , but essentially the same thing for an extra few minutes .

I used to be quite rocky when I was younger - full on mosh-pitting air guitaring madwoman. I once sprained my neck so badly while moshing that I had to have someone pull my arms to get me up from a lying position.

I wonder when I became calmer in my music tastes ... might have been something to do with having a kid, and most of my music containing expletives or violence got axed.

You can only make so many variations on the whole guttural scream/Satan/death/fast drum beat thing until it all starts sounding the same.

If it was Driftwood, this thread would already be 5 pages of him typing one song name per post.

I know nothing about metal and that's how I like it but, beyond Pandora, you might want to try Music Map.

Well damn Smiley: frown

The only music I can speak about with any real knowledge whatsoever is from games. That said, you might want to try The Black Mages out. They are ostensibly metal. You might also enjoy Kamelot. Try finding The Black Halo and listen for a while. There is absolutely no screaming involved however, the singer's voice is almost ****** inducingly good.

Ah ha! But you assume that all music within those genre's contains that type of vocal & point of focus. Let me put it this way:

I prefer rock-styled musical within the context of more aggressive technical performance from all instruments. Vocals need to be clear enough to understand the lyrical content without the clarity in such singers as James LaBrie. However, Dream Theater is a good example of what I like in music, due to it's technically challenging content (I am a musician, and thus respect technical ability when I hear/see it). However, I haven't cared much for their new releases since Scenes From A Memory released in '99. When I say I don't like the "kiddie" rock, I can't stomach the high-shrill attempt to scratch their voices with little talent and the straight-forward, non-technical stupidity that is the majority of their songs.

I also like vocalists in such music described above that mix their styles within a single tune. Such as Soilworks Björn "Speed" Strid who has a terrific clear vocal style and mixes that with a much more aggressive-yet-understandable growl that maintains tone & melody.

This. Dear God, this. But I guess that's kind of common among most types of music, but it seems to rear it's ugly head so much more in the rockish genre. Also, garage bands, I hate them. Usually. Once in a while there's a gem, but then they're famous...

Most forums don't have a prohibition against music threads like we do. You know what song keeps going through my mind:

Dare by the Gorillaz

I like it but I'm tired of it being stuck in my head. You could download it though, even though it's olde.

Har, har, it's not your preference.

What about Mastadon?

Music threads or music spam threads?

I'm asking legitimately here. I wasn't aware of a general prohibition against music threads at Chez Alla.

Music spam threads were annoying. It seemed more suitable to IM messages or something else--like my friend sometimes IMs me something he is listening to at the moment. That's not message board material.

But anytime anyone talks about music, it always becomes some complaining and driftwood joking. Damnit, I like when people talk about bands.

In my mind, the prohibition is only against Driftwood making music threads.

Lastfm has a lot more variety and allows you to skip songs without a preset limit. Pandora draws people by it's aesthetics but that's all it has going for it.

I don't really care for this type of music, but Idiot Pilot and Story of the Year are about the only two that come to mind.

Your music preferences are probably what's limiting you, my iPod has about everything but country on it.

Anyways, I'll throw out three other bands that don't fit this style but you might want to try.

The Whigs, Wolf Parade, and The Dandy Warhols.
