Break-A-Thon last weekendFollow

#1 Nov 14 2007 at 8:37 AM Rating: Decent
My school participated in a fund raiser for the "Military Family Support Center" this past weekend.

http://www.milfamily.org/.%5CCorporateBios_Frame.htm

a 501(c) corp (non-profit) group that helps exactly as their name states, military families.

All of the companies in my little plaza got involved and raised roughly $2900 with my school raising over $800. We were the single largest contributing member to the fund raising activities of the day.

I treated the fund raiser like you would a walk-a-thon or jump-rope-a-thon were each student promised to break X number of boards, in this case 5, and collected sponsors for each board. So if sora sponsored me for $1 per board I would collect $5 from him, and if nexa sponsored me for $3 a board I would collect $15 from her, etc...

I have not updated my media.html page so sadly i have to post direct links to the videos. Some are large (as much as 10M in size) others are much smaller with the smallest being under 1M in size.

They all load fast enough and should stream semi well depending on your bandwidth.

Feel free to check out the students as they raised their money. Yes everyone broke all 5 of their boards.

well the original file was over a Gig in data so for it to be only 14M is not bad.

FYI depending on your browser, extensions, etc... in the bottom left hand corner is the controls for the video flash file. mouse over that area and you should be able to get the play arrow to pop up. just click on that and the videos should start to play.

The next time we do something like that I will setup a paypall or some other kind of way to accept online donations.

Fun fact: Most military people hate handouts as much as anyone else.

I earn my fucking paycheck. Give your sympathy to someone who needs it.

Well, there are a few military families that Mr. Thumb and I have come across that totally hated receiving some kind assistance. There were a couple of families that seemed to have totally mooched off the system, but we saw most doing whatever they could to get out of the public assistance system as soon as they could.

yes. most will not like it, but those that have to accept it will work hard to get off of it.

also from what i understand this organization also helps those families who have service members whom have become disabled due to the war in Iraq and need more assistance then the feds. will provide.
