so i sucked it up, and went across the street to have the brakes fixed. dodge couldnt do it for 3 days aleast. and the brake place across the street was going to do it for half the price.

300 dollars later, i returned with a factorey defective calliper. all is good. but with a smile and a polite greeting, i was toold "how do we know that came off our truck? sorry, i cant help you"

I'll pretty much guarentee you there was nothing wrong with the brake caliper to begin with. Generally, those places that sell you breaks for half the cost that a dealership would make up their profit somewhere. So, while a front brake job is $99, they sell you calipers, tell you that your rotors can't be turned, and will try to get you to buy a brake line flush to make extra money.

When I was working for Chrysler dealerships for 6 years I can really only remember one or two brake calipers that actually malfunctioned. Those were stuck on vehicles with 80,000 to 100,000 miles on them. While calipers can stick and malfunction, it's not a common thing at all (contrary to all of those shops that are just trying to upsell you to make more money).

Also, if the caliper were bad, they would have simply replaced if had you gone to them. Since you went to Joe Blow across the street, they have no idea if it was actually bad or if they're simply fucking you.

Actually, if all of the info in his post is true, it sounds like the dealer was just another ripoff dealer.

It's a known fact that dealers take your *** to the cleaners on any work they do for you. The parts to replace the calipers and pads on a 2000 Caravan are less than half of the $300 the guy said he spent to fix his van (if you replace with loaded caliper set on both sides, which he only had 1 side replaced). In other words, $300 was kind of high, but what do you expect when you walk into a shop across the street from a dealer? Any price sounds good to you in comparison. Those guys see you coming and have a hardon. But that's beside the point. The point is that their ripoff price of $300 was half of what the dealer was offering to do it for....in 3 days.

Many dealers will gladly ***** over a customer who's already made a vehicle purchase. The industry is rife with it. There's a reason why lemon laws have been enacted in so many states; because car dealers are widely corrupt and the ranks aren't self-policed at all.

Frankly, this is one of those cases where he should have gone to the national customer service for the auto maker to get resolution. You'd be amazed at how much better service is available if you go through the channels. And if that failed, channels such as business regulators and a lawyer still exist. But only if you go through the time and trouble. Most people just give up, bend over, grab their ankles and grit their teeth.
