Yup, sounds pretty subjective to me.

in·stant ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nstnt)
n.
  • An almost imperceptible space of time. See Synonyms at moment.

  • A particular or precise time: at the instant of combustion.

  • Abbr. inst. The current month: your letter of the 15th instant.

  • A food or beverage designed for quick preparation.

  • adj.
Occurring at once; immediate: instant gratification.
    Imperative; urgent: an instant need.
    Now under consideration; present.

    adv.
    At once; instantly.

naysayers! i tell you, you can dream instantly. if you have been sleepy in the middle of a thought and felt yourself going more irrational with that thought, while at the same time losing control of your limbs, and dipping into slumber with the thought still racing, and realize that you have the choice to either continue falling or somehow refuse to fall asleep for fear of where the thought will take you.

i dont know about you, but i have. maybe this kind of dream is different than normal REM where your brain waves fall to a very low frequency first for about 10 minutes, then rise to the dream state for 30 minutes, and then fall back to the deep, sleep, and rise and fall throughout the night.

this kind seems like you are falling throught the dreamstate, while dreaming, sleep, yet you just dozed, and havent reached the low frequency yet.

tetrahydrocannabinol and myristicine are two chemicals that are known to bring the brains waves much closer to the levels in the dream state, without one necessarily being asleep. thats why many people believe that the use of cannabis brings creativity.

the reason its much easier to remember dreams you wake from is because you never get a chance to commit them to long term memory when you are sleeping. you usually only remember the last dream you had. long term memory is anything that stays in your brain for more than 3 hours. you have a dream every 30 minutes while you are sleeping and it lasts 10-15 minutes. there is not much reason to keep the old dream in memory, your brain needs to make a new one, therefore it gets lost before it hits long term memory.

this link has a few theories about lucid dreaming.

You're right. Only for some who lack an understanding of a basic word like "instant".

    yeah, this happens to me a lot when im really tired. i'll be thinking about something (or at work transcribing something boring ><) and i'll start to drift. i remember bizarre images and bright colors and loud sounds when i start awake. if this happens at work, i rewind the audio to pick up where i started drifting (which i can tell by missed words and on-line abbreviations like "ppl" slipping in) and it'll usually only be about 30 seconds. i know i wasn't asleep for long because i would have fallen out of my chair ^^;

if im even a little tired and lay down, that's it. like my bf and i will be laying down and talking, and as soon as we stop talking, i'm out. he'll watch me amused for a couple minutes, then shake me awake because i still need to feed my cat or get some stuff prepared for work or whatever. i will have only been asleep for less than five minutes, but i can remember what i was dreaming about, and he'll usually ask.

i have experienced lucid dreaming. when i know i am dreaming, i am usually unable to really change anything. i try to make things or people appear, but the only thing i can really do is change the direction i move in or start flying. those are always fun =) but eventually my mind will wander and i get involved in the dream again, forgetting that it is just a dream. but i do tend to really remember those later when i wake up.

something ive noticed is that i cant drive in my dreams. the brakes never work and i have a hard time controlling the vehicle o.O and i dream in color always, as far as i know, to answer prettyinblack.

ive woken myself from a bad dream once that i can remember. usually if i realize i'm dreaming i dont want to wake up because i want to try to control it. or it ceases to be a "bad" dream because it no longer is frightening.

sorry for writing a book ^^; and i appreciate all the responses. i think people's dreams are pretty fascinating. i know i frequently have recurring themes in my dreams that i pretty much know what mean to me and represent a fear of mine, but i wonder sometimes how other people's fears and desires manifest themselves.

Instant dreaming... well i too have dozed off for like 5mins then all of a sudden been in a dream. I hate those. Mine have no meaning what-so-ever. Is it true that you have alot of dreams while you sleep too? That's one i've wanted to know for some time now.

oh yea...has anyone ever had the T.V. on or been listening to music and fallen asleep and people in your dream were saying the stuff on t.v.? I was watching MTV and that show Road Rules came on and I was being eliminated... LOL it sucked ***. The rest of my day i was pissed off at it too.

When i turn the t.v. off when i sleep it's not too fun because i dont get the drama from those reality shows. :o.

Another thing... Last night i had this crazy dream that i saw this person i hadnt seen in like 3 years and i knew it was a dream but i wanted to see their face again so i started running twards them, then my mind started to "freak out" you could say... It wouldnt listen to me and insted I was rolling down this hill to a Wal-Mart... Then i woke up and went shopping...
It kinda changed my life... I called them up and talked to them. That was cool. "THANK YOU DREAMWEAVER!"
ALL IN ALL! dreams influence your mood for the day...Or at least it does for me. And dreams can change your life.

(I have no idea what i'm talking about. It's 4:20am {my time} and i'm really tired. If i said something extremly stupid...agian...just correct it for me.)

Since i'm really tried... am I going to have more dreams then usual tonight? Or just a longer one? Or neither... or both? *falls asleep and wont remember this when he wakes up*

(Q): What's that word when you have something wierd happen... like your brain is catching up with what's going on and it's called De-Ja-vu or something? What the hell is that? And how the hell do you spell it?! I'm freakin out! :P

I also can close my eyes all but for matbe 2 minutes and be in a dream. I also find that you get the best sleep when you are at work, school, and carpool (from work). I mean deep drool on your desk sleep too.... go figure because when i get home I cannot go to sleep (ffxi) and will usually stay up late and repeat the cycle.

    For the progression of sleep...

When you lay down, you enter stage 1 sleep. It's kind of like a state of enhanced relaxation.

Stage 2 is a deeper relaxation when your heart rate slows even more, as does your breathing. The EEG looks a little different.

Stage 3 is deeper yet, but the brain begins to show signs of activity.

Stage 4 is the same as 3 with a little more activity yet.

Then you fall back into stage 3, followed by stage 2, and then into REM sleep.

However, in stages 3 and 4 it is possible to have dreams. The difference is your body doesn't have the catatonia it normally would from REM sleep (your body actually paralyzes itself chemically while in REM sleep to keep from lashing out, since technically speaking, it's very light sleep).

It sounds like you dream in stage 3 and 4 a lot.. do you have a history of talking in your sleep, lashign around in your sleep, night terrors, or sleepwalking? More importantly, do you have a problem remembering your dreams most of the time?

Most of this is working off my knowledge from biopsych, so, bear with me.

Yeah, that's nice, and you're a unique snowflake and the rules of medical science don't apply to you and everything.

    But, no, you can't.

You're daydreaming. That's not dreaming, sorry.

Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

Yes, I read it. Claiming that two hours could be classified as "almost instantly" is specious and therefor irrelevant.

    dear 11000 post guy,
just because you talk a lot doesnt mean you know everything. doctors dont even know why you dream. they dont even know why some drugs work. they only know about 10% of the human brain. they dont know ****, in other words. now. if a daydream is that vivid, is it not a hallucination? if im SLEEP is it a daydream? wheres the line? so youre telling me that i have to be unconscious for 15 minutes before im sleep? and if so, then when im lucid dreaming, then i must be awake, right? what if you wake up from strong physical sensation, like someone is shaking you, but when you wake, youre alone? explain that? ghosts? nerve damage? come on mister medical engineer! go go.
    sincerely,
