Hello everyone...

Alright so here is my situation. Last night I got home from class and notice that my computer was off even though I know I left it on during the day. So when I went to turn it back on, I got one long continuous beep and then the thing shuts off. I tried turning it on and off several times and still the same issue. Then I noticed that the CPU fan wasn't turning. I looked to see if it was connected to power, and it was. So I tapped it and it started turning again, but I still got the same problem. This what I think happened...I think the berrings inside my CPU fan went out during the day and the fan stopped turning, therefore retaining on the heat within the heat sink, thus causing the CPU to fry...

I am just trying to get second opinions before I go out and buy another CPU...it just makes me quite angry that it could of been something as simple as the CPU fan. Anyways, any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

What type of processor was it? If its a P4 they have built in thermal protection. If its an AMD its now an expensive rearview mirror dangly thing

I guess then what I have is an expensive rearview mirror dangling thingy because it was an AMD...I was pretty sure that my motherboard had the some kind of thermal protection on it, but it may not correspond with just the CPU alone. Anyways, thanks for the help...better check Fry's and see what kind of combos they have...might as well upgrade. Thanks again

I would suggest checking your motherboard manual online and finding out what the one long continuous beep means.

From the description of your situation, mostly likely the beep will indicate that

BAD) no CPU could be detected (your junk is fried)

GOOD) no CPU FAN could be detected (just replace the fan)

In either case, unless you're going to buy a retail processor, then you will need to replace the fan that has decided to stop spinning; so I would suggest replacing that first and if that doesn't solve your problem, buy an OEM processor.

Thanks both of you guys for your help...I wen to the site, and it says that it can likely be a bad CPU, but most likely it could be the fan itself, since the fan plugs directly into my mother and it could be sending an error signal to it. The best way to find out when I get home tonight is to try and unplug the fan from the motherboard and see if it still gives me the beep. in theory it shouldn't since the CPU won't overheat right away, but if I still get the same signal, then I will go with buying a new fan idea and see if that works. Thanks again for your guys' help.

Yep, take this one step at a time. If your motherboard is like mine (I am using an MSI K7T Turbo), it will monitor your processor's heat. If it goes over a certain point it will beep at you and shut down your computer. Here is what I recommend:

1) Buy a new fan, and maybe update your heatsink to a Zalman. Its probably the best $35 dollars you can spend if it is compatible with your motherboard. Mine does a really good job on my 1800+.

2) Don't buy from Fry's. Order from NewEgg. Fry's struck out three times in a row on a processor that kept giving me problems and they really didn't want to be helpful. NewEgg really know's it stuff.

3) If it is fried, this is a good time to upgrade completely. Replace the motherboard and processor, and by a better heatsink and fan. Don't stay with stock. Their ok, but you can do alot better with a Zalman.

Just check the fan first, if your running a good motherboard it won't allow you to run the processor without the fan.
