First-ballot Hall of Famer flash in the pan or other?

Im not sure what you mean by this, but I will answer it how I think you meant it.

He will not be a Hall of Famer. He isnt that good. He was born with exceptional skills, but he doesnt know how to play the game. He gets by on talent alone.

Don't you think he'll put of hall of fame numbers? I mean, during his worst season he still put up 1224 yards in 15 games. He's been nothing but consistent throughout his career.

I agree with you that he gets by on talent alone. But he has so much talent he can get away with it. Barring injury, I think he'll cruise into the hall.

Aye, I agree with you that the man can get by on talent, but not so long that it will carry him into the hall. Team managment and coaching have changed so much in recent years that it would astonish me if teams could not figure out how to stop Moss. if his work ethic continues on the same course for the rest of his career the league will find a way to contain him and make his gaudy numbers of touchdowns per catch and yards per catch in inaffectual

My favorite football player was Bo Jackson. Sure his career was cut short by injury, but I just loved to watch him play. No other running back that I got to see play had the same kind combination of size, speed and power as Bo.

He was lightning quick to hit a hole, powerful enough to escape the tackle of a small opponent and agile enough to avoid a big one, and defensive backs usually ended up looking like road kill when they got in his way.

Plus Ol' BoBo only needed one play on Tecmo Bowl to dominate a game.

If you look at the hall of fame, it's filled by guys who put the heart and soul into every play...Randy Moss is good and one of the most dominant WRs today, but he is not ever gonna make it into the hall with his half assed attitude and sideline hijinks.

Gayle Sayers was very fun to watch and so was Barry Sanders. But my all time favorite was Walter Payton. He pretty much cared nothing about himself when playing and would go all out every day as long as it would help his team.

Very well said. I remember that super bowl when they gave William Perry the ball down by the goal line. Here you have arguably the best running back ever to play the game, and you give the TD to some circus freak.

Plus he ran over Brian Bosworth on Monday Night Football. You have to like a guy that made "the BOZ" look like the a$$ he is.

Bah. Dont playa-hate. The Boz played his role the way he wanted to.
He used his fame and the public's deire to see him to his own good fortune.

Trash talker? Yeah, but he backed it up.

Backed it up for only a couple years though. He didnt choose to quit.

Crappy actor? So what? He took his shot at it. How many people you know that get to live 2 of their dreams?

The Boz set the stage for the showboats of today that everyone waits to see on ESPN at night, but even then, they dont do it with the style that The Boz had.

Mowhawks rule. Especially when colored.

Junior Seau in his prime. If you watch much high school football, you'll often see one player on defense who seems to be everywhere. Seau was that way, but in the NFL. It is rare to see this in the NFL and usually the player doing it only lasts a year or two before injury or age take their toll. Seau was doing this for about a decade.

Offense is a scheme - a collective effort in which perhaps half the squad has to be doing their job well and the other half just can't ***** up in order for the play to work. Look at one of the best offensive efforts in recent history: the Vikings about 5 years back, Randy Moss's rookie year. The quarterback was Randle Cunningham - who is a good quarterback but certainly not among the best of all time particularly at that age. The quarterback is like the tip of the iceberg - its the part you see but it can't be there without a lot of stuff underneath supporting it.

The quarterback has to have the line give him some time to throw, next someone has to be open to get the ball to, and then he has to make the throw. The third can't happen without the first two. Yet even with the greatest passing game, such as the Chargers had in the early 1980's and the Broncos has with Elway and the three Amigos, you have to have a running game to win championships, and unless you have an offense with the variety of a circus carnival, as the Rams did the first year they won it, you better have some defense, too, preferably lots.

The greatest running backs I recall: Barry Sanders, ********** Peyton and OJ had a hard time winning championships. Peyton won in 1986 (7?) with the Bears, but it was a team built on defense. It is almost as if a running back that good prevents the passing game from developing properly - and as I follow the Chargers - who have a very good back in Tomlinson now - I'm not really expecting to see this pattern change. In some sense, the quarterback doesn't matter as long as he is really good at handing off because we haven't had a good solid wide receiver since Tony Martin left about a decade ago. Thus I would draft on defense and follow the Bears/Giants/Tampa Bay formula: score 20, give up 17. Now all we need is a rookie Seau...

Yes but he was on great defenses - like Lawrence Taylor. (In fact arguably one of the best defenses ever put together.) When he left the field there was no gaping hole which offences could exploit.

Seau was on teams so bad that in '98 they finished first in team defense but last in their division. Usually leading the league in defense is worthy of a playoff birth.

As for the best, I doubt Seau will be considered because of the abysmal teams for which he played - which just makes it really hard to tell.

Seau will be my favorite because it would have been so easy to give up, cry for a trade, or openly question the management. He didn't and probably is far less well known then if he had. I wish I could have seen him in his prime with a decent offense.

Ya know... I liked watching Lawrence Taylor too. That guy's motor was just on full throttle all the time. He never, ever gave up on a play. You can keep your Ditkas, Seaus and Singletarys... Lawrence Taylor was the greatest linebacker to ever play the game, bar none.
