Good for you btw. It's a great sport to get into, especially at an early age. It will really help with hand-eye coordination. One of the most notable changes I noticed at the time (cause I was playing flag football in Jr. High at the time) was how much easier it was to throw a football accurately while running "out of step" with the throw. You learn from fencing how to completely separate what your feet are doing from what your arms/hands are doing. Hours and hours of footwork drills will do that...

It's interesting the difference in observations about foil vs epee Smash. I recall foil being a much more precise form of fencing, and I always saw epee as "sloppy". I think alot of that difference was due to changes in the sport about the same time that I was getting out. I know they changed the point system from points against to points for (a semantic difference really), but I vaguely recall that they were making changes to the "right of way" rules for foil as well. I stopped paying much attention to it, so I'm not sure what exact changes they did end up making (I'd just heard rummors of changes coming and what they'd likely mean).

Foil used to have *very* strict right of way rules. It wasn't just about who got a hit first, but who got a "legal" hit first. They used a right of way rule for that. The first person to extend got right of way. The other guy could only legally hit him if he knocked his extention off target first (a beat atttack), or parried and riposted. If they did lighten up the extension and right of way rules for foil, then it would make the sport a lot more messy. Given the smaller target area, you'd end up with a lot more "simultaneous hits", which were up to the judges to decide who got it first (or the electronic scorer if you're using one).

It's still a super fun sport though in any case...

You still have to have right of way to score, but you can, as allways, riposte to score.

Riposte grants right of way. It's not often you see a point annuled due to right of way anymore, but the rules are still in effect.

Sabre has right of way, also, a little diffrent than foil, but the same idea. Epee never has, and does, indeed look much sloppier.

People who fence Epee would argue it's purer because of the larger scoring area, and the increased complexity. A stop hit will or won't score in foil or sabre depending on right of way which is about the only time you see it come into play any more, but in epee it will.

"Epee" is in about 90% of all crossword puzzles I've ever done.

I think it's more ballance than hand eye. There isn't anyone I know who fenced competively for any legnth of time who can't cassually walk down the length of a higway gaurdrail without ever looking unballacned.
