Anyone Unemployed?Follow

I've been on and off for 4 years since I've graduated college (In telecommunications) and it really sucks. Been working lots of temp jobs on and off, and I'm sick of looking. I don't want to go back to school, partially cuz I feel too old for it (I'm 28). And quite frankly, I'm not too interested, have no motivation, and don't want to face another possiblity of getting burned with a degree I sunk $$ and time into that's worthless when I get out.

Anybody else in a similar situation?
Good thing there's FFXI to drown our sorrows. :)

Sorry to hear your situation. I was in the same boat myself. Working temp jobs after college is no fun! The only advice I might give (which is what I did, and I'll admit, I got lucky considering the job market) is to be more selective if you can with your temp company. If you have the sway with your temp agency let them know you only want a temp-to-hire position. I got sick of 2-3 day (or even 1 mo or more) gigs. Finally I just said "Thats enough" I turned down about 4 offers for short term stuff til they got me a real interview. Its REALLY hard to do when you have no money, I know, but...well..good luck :)

Luckily I have 2 jobs to keep me occupied right now. I'd say, read some books, get some certs, post a resume on monster and hope you get a call. I don't really plan on working on either field that I have degrees in, and I don't want to work in the fields I have technical certs in, so I'm hoping to pull life in Peace Corps.. give something back to the world, maybe paint a better face for the USA.

I figure it'll be more fulfilling than living 9-5.

Telecommunications you say?
.................damnit, that’s what they did call my degree, but they ever so conveniently changed the name to Network communications management. Wonder if that might be why they changed it.

By any chance, did you get your Telecommunication degree from DeVry?

First 28 is not too old. Do you get embarrassed when sitting next to students 18-24? I can guarantee you that they will make asses out of themselves before you do

And for the money thing I say Financial Aid
File a FAFSA to get loans and grants. Search your prospective colleges for possible scholarships. You can get money for just about anything these days. Hell, if you are a minority you can go to school nearly free of charge.

Dude,

I work in warehousing. No degree due to sheer lack of will to finish it off. I'll have to fix that one of these days. But we have entry level applicants all the time with exorbirant amounts of paper they can hang on the wall. And no skills. And no work ethic. And they don't last long.

Here comes a bit of advice: If you want a decent job, become a decent employee. Do extraordinary things like show up every day on time, dress and groom like you care what you look like, treat other employees like people, and work like you own the damn place and it might go under if you don't.

Getting a degree does not entitle you to a cushy job. It does not guarantee you a job. It should open some jobs for you that would otherwise not be available. It should indicate you have the discipline to see the process through. It should indicate which area(s) for which you have an understanding beyond that of the layman.

As Mr. Leary sasys, 'Life sucks, get a helmet.'

I'm not accusing you of any of the faults common to the poor employees I described above. You may be an excellent employee with a run of bad luck. It happens. I worked several ****** jobs before I caught on to the company I'm with, strangely enough, at your age. I do feel your pain.
