I was wondering when it comes to casting - could you do something like start the song in song-cast reduction gear and then end it in duration gear? Or do you have to pick one or the other?

also this game is hilarious if even only for the whole "I'm going to change my clothes while casting/weaponskilling/using job abilities" mechanic. Imagining it in real terms is amusing.

The cast time is calculated when you start casting, and the buff duration/potency is calculated when you finish casting. So yes, you can swap to -SST/FC gear before you cast, and duration/potency gear in the middle.

that is hilarious, and ridiculous - and good to know.
So in other words it is totally worth macroing in the whole +2 set at the end of every song to get duration?
Man this job is a gear pig.

There's no reason for you to macro in the full set of Aoidos' at the end of a song, since the set bonus doesn't do anything for duration, just gives +base stats based on the element of the song (a fire based song would give up to +5 Str if cast with the full set on). While you'd want to finish off casting in the hands, body, and legs, the only reason you'd want to finish casting with either the head or feet on is if you were casting the song that they +1 (Madrigal for the head, Scherzo for the feet). In any other situation, you'd be better off finishing the cast in a +singing or +wind/string skill piece to boost the potency of the song.

I coulda sworn we capped potency through skill on everything but lolScherzo. Either way, and I'm no DD mind you, 1 or 2 STR and DEX might outdo the 1 or 2 Att/tenths of a Haste, anyway.

If your combined skill is high enough to cap out on Minuet V (which is the highest combined skill cap song we've currently got that I'm aware of), then go ahead and finish the cast in full +2. If you still need skill to cap out on a song's potency, I recommend that first and foremost.
