As per the Attack to STR issue:

Meat Mithkabobs increase Ranged Damage outpute not as a result of the Strength Increase. It is a result of the Attack percentage increase. This is also the case using Minuet. Verbal proof of this is during an HNM once where I do about 90dmg per hit the bard used Sould voice and minuet which increased my dmg to 180.

Further evidence can be seen by equipping a STR4 RSE belt found in BCNM. I equipped it and notice an insignificant difference in my dmg output. The result is likely apparent in the interview that STR2 = 1 attack and since a meat mithkabob = 20% attack it is by far the reason you are doing more DMG.

As for skill chains I put some here that I have seen but in no way is a comlete list.

Ranger Skill chains

Note that more often than not it is best for Rng to start the skill chain for a couple of reasons:
A. Ranger to Thief skillchains are very powerful and Range can steal hate for a second so Thief can trick onto Tank. Not many other melee can do that without Provoke.
B. The additional DMG as a result of the Chain adds to the hate built up. So a RNG may be creating more hate than necessary.

Note: Depending on PT make up it may be beneficial for the RNG to use WS solo. If there are two other melee they can do a skill chain. Sometimes including the Ninja as 2nd person in a skill chain will help them keep hate. Often a RNG WS can finish off the mob and reduce the duration the mob's attention is on you. However, that said, RNG skillchains are very fun to see so try to work it out with your party before hand.

The information below is set up as most optimal Level 2 chains I have seen. The DMG of the chain is a result of the 2nd ws used and penalty is awarded if a lower lvl WS is used as the 1st ws. This is very difficult to explain and better seen as a result of many WS. For example, a sidewinder (600) to sidewinder (600) combo, Reverberation will result causing about 300 dmg I have found. However, when something else is used to cause Reverberation on the same mob the result may be 150 dmg. As a general rule, the DMG output is based on 2nd ws more than the 1st. Thus, Skillchains where RNG ends with Sidewinder are much fun to watch, and hence the benefit of doing chains with a thief.

Pre-Sidewinder (only considered Flame and Piercing)
With Monk: Fusion (Fire/Light). Flaming Arrow - Combo. Great for GOBs.

With DRK: Distortion (Ice/Water). Piercing Arrow - Slice/Nightmare or Spinning Scythe. Good for beetles.

With Thief: Distortion (Ice/Water). Piercing Arrow - Viper Bite. This is the highest dmg skill chain that will likely result until post-Sidewinder.

Post-Sidewinder (this has high miss rate so you may find you will need to figure out how much tp is good for you to go. 150 was a pretty good number for me.)

I'm only listing two jobs as I lvled all my time with a Thief or Drk.

Thief works very well. The skillchain should be:
Sidewinder > Viper Bite/Dancing Edge = Distortion (Ice/Water)
Your ws will almost always turn the mob and giving the thief a chance to sneak and trick.

Dark Knight work fairly well too. The skillchain should be:
Sidewinder > Guillotine = Fragmentation (Wind/Lightning)
This is a good change from many levels of distortions and post-60 when the DRK actually has this ws plus Sneak Attack and Trick Attack using Thief sub this produces high dmg output.

Conclusion: It all comes down to what weapon the other person is using. Also, depending on how many melee you have you may want to solo your ws. It was often the case that I build up TP fastest, even more than SAMs.

Wow Very Informative Thread. I'm printing it now. 8]

I'd like to second the notion for the Skillchain Chart to be added in order to complete the perfect Ranger FAQ.

Although I love everything listed I would like to add one thing.
I now have Rng lvld to 35 and I have found that having the Bows with the Longest delay make the best bows hands down. This allows New Ranger at low lvl to save gil by not purchasing all the bows for rng along the way. The Ones to purchase are as follows:

Self Bow lvl 7
Power Bow lvl 16
Great Bow lvl 30

I haven't a need for any higher yet so maybe some high lvl rng can add support to this. The Plus 1 bows are for kicks like Ranged acc. and att. which are greatly needed to fill out a proper rng equipment package. I learned this the hard way after obtaining my new Assassins Bow lvl 29 that proved to be worthless compared to the Great Bow at the next lvl of 30. After a few days with the Great Bow, I Upgraded to the Plus 1 model. Now all together my +44 ranged acc. makes me the proudest I've been with Ranger.

Just a foot note for another thread possibly would be to ask Why is there no armor that improves Ranged Accuracy and/or Ranged attack that a Ranger can wear? Perhaps someone will fill me in on what I'm missing.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting!!

Yes, there aren't any ranged accuracy-boosting body armors for rangers (save the sandorian CP tunics which are LOW defensed and take up a potential bandana / emperor hairpin, and the picnic table / checkersboard Brigandine +1 armor which will cost you an arm and a leg [plus it only gives +1 to agi]), so you'll just have to wait until level 58 for the AF Hunter's Jerkin [+10 Ranged Accuracy].

But almost every other piece of equipment will help, and those are more than enough support to help you hit.

Bad connection? ;_;

The /recast macros tell you how much time's left before you can use it again. So if it's 0, then it's ready.

In all honesty, some of the gear progression is wrong. RNG at low levels should never use an item that doesn't allow you to equip a San d'Orian or Kingdom Bandana, as that takes away more DEF and AGI. Also IMO, guns before 22 are an absolute waste of gil. Crossbows will do near the same damage and will add some nice atatus effects without having you throw gil at the mob to damage it. And in my opinion, Leaping boots at the very least are required for Elvaan RNG, just in my own experience. You can get away without the Emp. Hairpin though.

Try buying drone earrings when available.

At 30, you should be wearing beetle rings +1, and at 35-36 or whenever, switch to Horn Rings +1. Remember, RAcc is your primary goal here. Missed shots do 0 damage.

Okay, in Kamena's post (which I think is EXCELLENT) it says r.acc >>> r.atk >>> agi >>> str, and it also says atk doesnt effect r.atk. But it also says berserk effects ranged weapon dmg. When i switch out my hawkers knife (agi+2 R.acc +11) thats in my sub weapon slot (with dual wield, of course) with my Combat caster's axe (atk + 5), i do more dmg with a ranged weapon attack. Now the axe has a higher dmg output (12 vs. 33) and the +5 atk stat up, giving me a higher atk stat. When i get a brd in pty with Minuet III, I get about 20-30 more dmg per arrow on a ranged weapon atk **** i love Brd's ^^). Minuet effects atk and nothing else, if i'm not mistaken. So if three ability's/weapons/songs up nothing but pure atk, and my dmg goes up on regular ranged weapon attacks, doesnt this prove that atk does definetly influence r.atk? If i am wrong, please give me a reason and some proof.

p.s. I dont have a parse to prove what i say, but take 5 min and find a brd of any lvl (minuet is 3brd, right? you could sub brd) and play around with your weapons on any lvl of mob

p.p.s Kamena, help me out! /kneel

Concerning melee weapons, the use of daggers after 28 (added +10 ranged acc, +11 with Hawkers knife at lvl 30) is most widely accepted as primary. Keep in mind tho that at lvl 63 the Francisca (axe) is a very very nice item (+7 ranged acc, +7 ranged att) and is used by most as an end game weapon. The simple fact is that as a ranger your primary damage comes from your ranged weapon, and melee weapons are mostly used for their stat increases and a little extra tp gain when not shooting your ranged.

As a rng/war its suggested to use the dagger up to 63 where you can switch out with the axe. Your ranged acc will benefit greatly from what the dagger offers. At end game for rng/war most will wield the Francisca.

As a rng/nin with dual wield capability, you can afford to equip an axe and a dagger if you wish (or sword). But most will dual wield archers or hawkers knives for the added ranged acc. above lvl 63 you will see many rng/nin wielding a hawkers knife and a Francisca.

With the use of either sub job, your melee combat will be a very minimal factor in your damage output, and you shouldnt worry too much if your dagger/sword/axe skill isn't maxed as should your marksmanship/archery.

hello all Yumiko here, i just started RNG lev 9 now but i must say its fun as **** and the damage is sweet. but what i like most about it is wide scan...wtf you may be saying, but to be a RNG IS to have lots of money!..how you ask well, a friend of mine and myself went farming the other day for courls we where the only ones there. with wide scan i found every courl in the area. i was using my 38THF/9RNG and he was 30MNK/15RDM i would use SATA+WS when i could and BAM! dead courl. anyway we made over 30k apeice in under an hour and a half. this is plenty of of money to fund my RNG, just thought i'd share that info with you all.

P.S.
i finally got rabbit charm and killed bigmouth billy all B/C of wide scan lol

Great post, answered a lot of my questions and concerns. Rng/war has been my planned main job since I decided to buy the game. I really feel better now that I know some of the other servers hold rng/war in somewhat high regard. My server Titan is predominantly rng/nin (in the search 95% use nin as sub consistently). I have gotten slack from other players that I have partied w/ "that nin should be the only sub for rng". And yet I get compliments when I quest with friends that have jobs over lvl 60 on my ability to DD and not pull aggro off tank(s).
I would also like to add that at low to mid lvls whm seems to be good option for sub if you want to solo for a while.
I have currently put leveling my 32 rng on hold though, so I can lvl war to 50 and thf is already at 25. Then I can more effectively farm/garden and hopefully get a few NM drops to earn enough money to buy new gear. I'am saving for: Noct Doublet+1-70k,Noct Gloves+1-40k, Noct Brais+1-40k, Noct Beret+1 30k,Noct Gaiters+1-50k. I currently have Archers knife/Great Bow+1/2 beetle rings+1/2 shield earrings/rng necklace and mrc capt belt. I would like these items but I cant afford them YET. Howkers knife (300k starting)/ at lvl 33 Peacock charm (8-10 mil will take awhile)/at lvl 35 drone earrings(not sure of the price though) Any corrections or suggestions on equipment and other money making oppurtunities is greatly appreciated.

Aimxxx,

As far as your gear desires go, you may want to reconsider a couple choices. Keep in mind I haven't subbed WAR in a while, so your gear needs may be somewhat different than mine. ;)

1) The Noct Gaiters +1: These add to DEX, not AGI or ranged accuracy. I recommend that once you hit 34 you get the Bastokan or Republic (if you can afford these) Greaves. Also, I'm not sure of your race, but as an Elvaan, I like my RSE boots. The AGI +3 is very nice, and these can be swapped out with the Bastokan Greaves as needed.

2) Either become a farming slave, or have fun with Argus. I think we all want that charm, but I would be curious to know how many RNG actually own this thing. Also, I wonder at what level they recieved this.

3) I'm not sure about your back item, but I've been using my Nomad's Mantle for quite some time now, with nice results.

Very nice, however I did find a discrepency in the armor section. You suggest certain types of head armor, but when you reach the recommended body armor for that lvl is a tunic. Wearing a tunic prevents headgear, but that seems to be the main thing I found.

One question I don't see answered by this thread (maybe I'm just tired and missed it) is what is RNG's key melee skill? Dagger, axe?

I'm just starting out as RNG, so this is an opinion from one inexperienced in the job, but what i've noticed is that a dagger is more useful to me at lvl 17. An axe has such a large delay and i only get about 3 swings before i shoot again, (hate control) and with a dagger i get 5, the dmg doesn't matter but the TP helps :) Also i'm elv and i feel i need as much agi as i can get. So the beestinger was a must for me after i noticed how bad my racc was on xp mobs. I've seen elvaan rngs at higher lvls so i know it gets better :)

Rate up, good thread! Gave me the basic RNG knowledge I needed to know.

If I may, though, I'd like to request an update to the FAQ of sorts - because it seems that most of the things here apply mostly to before the big patch in February. Certain equipment, as brought up by someone on the 2nd page (Noct's, etc) are also not taken into consideration. Perhaps other new alternatives to food (like sautees for new RNGs) could be added too.

edit: I read the thread more carefully and found the answer to my question. Rate ups for helpful posts, thank you!^^
