Taking a Ranger out to Solo...Follow

I've asked similar questions before regarding different jobs, but I'd like to know exactly how a Ranger holds up while soloing.
As far as I see it, given the cost of ammunition, solo farming is necessary fairly often. The question is, though, with the right combination of equipment, the right support job, or maybe just skill and discretion on the player's part, might a Ranger ever be able to hold up against even matched opponents, even past level 10 or so?
I know that probably isn't likely, but even so, I'm sure that there are experienced Rangers on this board who've given it a try, and I'd like to know just how it goes, or if they happen to have any advice for one who likes to occasionally (not always, mind you) take their character out of the usual party-grind and just go wander around on one's own, just for s**ts and giggles. One who, to be more precise, is strongly considering Ranger as his advanced job of choice when the right level rolls around.
Any comments?
