I can, however, find a reason to want double-post eels without having to drag London into it.

Question to you gents:

Recently my mobile has had the rather unfortunate experience of being throughly soaked in a small pool of water. Since this incident, it's decided that it doesn't want to co-operate with such an accident-prone user as myself.

Thus, I need a new cellular phone. I am intrigued at this whole 'smart-phone' thing (my previous phones have all been rather... singular in purpose).

My question is, why should I want to pay the ludicrous sums required for a smart-phone, and what benefit will it have for myself? I could afford one but I'm not sure I want to be paying for something when I may only end up using it the same as I'd use any other phone. Calls. Texts. Crappy-camera.

Like Turin said, getting a smart phone is like having access to a computer everywhere you go. Unless you carry your laptop with you EVERYWHERE, it's worth looking into.

I pretty much run my life through my phone now. Calls, texts, crappy camera, e-mail, diary, facebook. I think most people who own a smart phone will tell you pretty much the same thing.

I am a long time 'Dumbphone' user for want of durability and eschewing of fluff. I finally adopted bluetooth around 2006 and have recently moved up to having GPS and 3G data. I shopped for about six months for this latest upgrade, and finally settled on the Nokia E73 from my existing carrier T-Mobile. With he credit I had saved up it cost me about $70 but you can get one with a contract for just $30.

Though it's running the ancient Symbian S60v3, it is truly a feature-complete 3G phone. They only thing I've found it doesn't do is read FLAC files, but I'd rather not eat 50mb a song anyway.

It's got some old silicon in there (but running a decent clock speed), so it does get caught up a little when you throw it's built-in browser at really heavy pages, but just for example I can jump on Alla to lurk and post, and it can play Youtube over Wifi or 3G.

I believe, however, that the greatest feature of this phone for clods like me is this amazing tactile feedback system it has in it's keyboard. It's a thing called buttons. It has a full f*cking keyboard of them! It doesn't take three taps to make a f*cking apostrophe and seven taps for an ampersand!

I'll just motor off some features:
3G data, GPS that you can use the onboard maps or google maps with, Bluetooth with an 'off' button right on the keyboard, 3.5mm headphone plug!!, FM Radio, 5 megapixel camera that takes decent video too, LED flash that also works as an insane flashlight (f*ck 'flashlight' apps). It does Skype if you don't wanna burn minutes, you can plug it into your laptop and use it as a 3G modem (tethering), and it's on a network that will give you a useful amount of uncapped-rate data (nothing is unlimited) for <$50 a month, and about 50 even with unlimited text thrown in.

Speaking of 'apps', I f*cking hate the concept. All the useful **** you can get for this phone is drop-dead free. There aren't a bazillion games, and most are written for smaller resolutions running the same platform, but it runs flash in or out of browser.

It does everything a non-********* could tolerate doing on a 3.5" screen.

For what it's worth I have a cheap-*** phone that can't have cost me very much at all (£50 or so?) and it does everything I want a phone to do. I just want something I can call/text people with, and precious little else, because I'm quite happy covering everything else with other gadgets.

That way, if one thing goes tits-up, I'm not crippled.

Excellent.

If for some reason you (note: the collective "you", not just milich) ever decide you need to pass through Central Oregon, BTW, you need to do this. Granted, the silicone cup you get as a "prize" is kind of stupid, but it's a good reason to hit all seven breweries in town.

Bend, OR: One brewery for every 13,000 people because the place will drive you to drink, and you might as well drink good beer if it's going to do that.

Most importantly though I get my work email on my phone, I can't live without that

but having everything on a device I take everywhere is a godsend with how busy I am

My $100 phone I bought two years ago could also organise my calendar, and set reminders, and play decent games if I was desperate enough to want to play mobile games. MP3 player is for music. :p

Basically smartphones seem to be able having an all-in-one device, when the only real extra it has from 'dumb' phones is ausome-internetage. And apps.

TBH the only thing that would get me into smartphones would potentially be some of the music-apps on iPhone. Itege! Any decent synth programs worth using on the iPhone?

When I say organize my calendar I mean its attached to my exchange calendar and I can view work meetings and send meeting requests to coworkers, also apps are a big deal, the reminders I have is a widget app that puts sticky notes on home screens that I leave messages for myself like "Preorder Dragon Age 2 before the free upgrade to signature edition expires" or "Get money out for parking" I check my phone constantly and its great having these reminders present

My favorite little app is called ringdroid, it lets you pull clips of music out of mp3s etc in order to create a ringtone, takes almost no time and is quite fun

And I dont need an MP3 player because of my phone, useless having an extra device when the one I already carry handles that task, and better than most MP3 players

If I ever do, I have my PSP anyway

I'm not one to say everyone needs a smartphone, but it makes my life much easier

I have a smart phone. I also have an mp3 player that holds 32,000 songs. Neither weigh or take up enough room for me to have to debate which I want to bring.

Neither play games, show comic books, surf the internet, or play videos like my PSP, though, so this is kind of a mundane argument.

You must not have a very good smartphone if you think the PSP is a better device for browsing the internet.

honestly there is no argument here, there are so many gadgets at this point that there is bound to be a setup better for different people

I dont have a broad taste in music and only carry about 8 Gigs on a flash drive in my car radio, and about 5 gigs on my phone

If I was a 32,000 song person I would consider something like an archos for the storage space

So who wants to just start posting personal set ups for gadgets? I'll start

Android Phone
Flash Drive in Car Radio
PSP

I'm minimalistic I guess

i'd want to check out the local breweries anyway. i think i'd decline the full on bend ale trail thing out of spite, due to the intense fury the site is making me feel by mentioning "our 7 local craft breweries" but giving no indication of what their names are or how to find them without just googling.

edit: speaking of oregon, i'll probably be drinking some of this tonight. i would likely live here if i were in portland (i'd also be trying to disrupt my ex-girlfriend's current relationship). their sour beers are excellent.

if deschutes is as good as they say, i may have to revise my "california is the best brewery state" opinion. hair of the dog makes my favorite american beers, and cascade definitely competes with russian river or lost abbey on the wild ale front. (shrug) distribution here in northeast is great though, with a few huge exceptions (bells, russian river, deschutes, hair of the dog).

Northern California can be regarded as 'might as well be Oregon'. It has about as much in common with the rest of California as Arnold Schwarzenegger has with the World Chess Federation.

I'ma chime in, though admittedly late, not all smart phones have a sh*t camera, mine has an 8MP one, just depends on what you get.

And @ lolgaxe's post, the PSP phone should be out this year, rumored to be running the newest version of android, will have 2 markets on it, one for Android apps, and one for PSP related things.

I doubt it, it won't be an explosion in popularity, but its designed with a touchscreen for normal use and a game controller slide out for games, where as the N-gage was this clusterf*ck mashup in a single thing that had games that played like garbage

the PSPhonewill have the benefit of android market for games that are great on the go, like angry birds, and PSP type games for the more hardcore, though I don't expect anything uber hardcore since the PSP2 is on the horizon as well, but someone already showed a PSone emulator running on it hooked up to the PS style slideout controller, and I could see myself spending time with that

still depends on the phone, the Evo takes rather nice pictures, and the one new nokia, i think its the N9, takes excellent photos

its a mix of hardware and software focusing, the ones that get a better hardware focus actually take decent pictures, better than some point n shoots from around 2 years ago

still quite a ways off until they reach current point n shoots though
