Why so many PLDs in Askar boots?Follow

I've noticed that I see a lot of plds wearing Askar boots around town these days. Am I missing something? Is -dmg taken/enmity really better than shield skill, or is this just town/WS gear I'm seeing? I don't generally play with other plds, so I can't see if they actually wear it while tanking or not.

I have a pair I use them to goof around. That's about it. If I am fighting low level mobs to help out friends I will wear them for extra DD, but as far as WS feet I use hecatomb. The AF boots are still better for tanking anything that could actually put any kind of hurt on you.

They're good for a few things.

First, sure, you can use them in a damage down set - AF better for things that can be shield blocked, but note that it is "Damage taken" not "Physical damage taken". One could use them in a set made for taking a large magical attack or something, or for kited mobs where shield won't proc, etc.

Second is that they've got a generous chunk of MP on 'em. One possible use for that is to toggle with Homam for cure cheat. Homam has 31HP/MP, Askar has just the 30MP. If you're at higher levels of MP, that may help out...so why not use for that if you have 'em? Could also use in Chivalry (or max MP in general) macro if you don't have Homam I guess.

They've also got some Enmity, where AF and Homam don't. Sure, not the only piece with it...but if you've got 'em...
Prior to I.R. feet, getting more than +1 Enmity in this slot was somewhat rare too.

WS, same sort of thing I guess. They're not -that- hot for it, but if you don't have Hecatomb/Rutters/whatever and aren't using Atonement for whatever reason, then they do have STR.

In addition to all that, yeah, they do look pretty good in town =P

They're macro-wear to be sure, but not without purpose. I.R. are a good alternative now, but Askar were around first.

Isiolia said it all, except one thing. If you TP in Dusk Ledelsens, like I do, you have to macro them out while running around. The only other boots I wear are Gallant and Askar (don't have IR, bored to hell with Campaign after getting IR body). Askar look nicer (especially since I wear Askar Dirs) and might actually help you out a bit more if you were to get agro randomly.

I see them as more for /nin if you dont have homam/dusk/aurum etc. They have str and enmity so they will technically do more than AF will do (since you cant block if you have shadows up). My wife actually used these for awhile (just got homam feet this past Sunday) while /nin cause she was too broke for Dusk (spent a lot of her gil gearing her Samurai to the max). She would macro in AF for ichi which may still be the case but I think homam will just stay on full time to keep timers down (not sure what would be best so any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated).

If you have Haste and Minuets from a BRD, you should be recapping even without the feet (assuming you have your other haste gear, of course). For ichi, if you're even worried in the slightest about the timing, I'd strongly suggest you use AF. If you're not, then it's safe to go with Homam instead.

lol, I can tell I've been out of touch for a while. Most of those uses would never have occured to me.

Thanks for the input, guys. RL caught up to me around the time DD tanking came into vogue, and since then I haven't been researching the job much. Looks like I need to start doing some serious reading, especially on gear choices for different situations. Any likely places I can start? I read the stickied gear and food guide, but it doesn't go into enough detail about when and why for my tastes.

Shameless plug, but I've got an (as of yet unfinished) guide to DD PLD here. I'd also suggest looking at the sticky at the top and peruse the "DD PLD" particular portion - it's got a good collection of the top threads.

Have fun!
