Let me start off by saying I'm not a PLD, not a tank of any sorts. I'm leading a ToAU group and we're approaching the final fight. For the latter part I'm thinking of having our PLD Tank out of melee range in magic defense gear. The problem lies with that I'm quite sure he doesn't have Iron Ram gear or enough notes for it (He doesn't have time for campaign). His current gear is pretty standard issue for lvl 75 PLDs, Adaman with a few bits of relic, Koeing shield etc. So to the question; would he be better tanking in that or would it be better to suggest the following bits of gear:

Coral/Merman's Earring, Rings and Set
Lamia Mantle & Bow
Resolute Belt
Unfettered Ring
Light resist gear
Anything else you suggest within reasonable price or reach.

Also, will Dark or Light staff help resist Alexander's magic attacks? If so, Staff or Sword & Shield.

And if you think it'd be wiser for him to straight tank, lemme know.

Earth Staff for regular hits, macroing in Sword/Board for Enmity. For incomming magic attacks, have him buy an Iron Ram Lance for -10% magic damage taken.

Most of Alexander's RAs are actually physical, so keep that in mind. His two hour and spells are definitely magic based though.

From experience ( myroomate was the PLD ) Tank out of melee range, Light staff, and he is going to die on the 2hr if he can manage to live then good but expect death. after he 2hr'd me ( Sam/Nin ) and a Mnk/Dnc straight tanked him until PLD was unweakened, was an epic fight to say the least.
75 SAM / 75 RNG / 75 Nin / 75 Cor / 75 War
I got my endgame LS!

I did the fight five times attempting to get my own win. I've yet to have an opportunity to go back. Of the five attempts, we got to Alex four times. Our second run had a stream of bad luck on the first few stages and we couldn't even get to Alex.

Each time we lost, it was due to time and his Gospel of the Lost move. I actually survived all but one two hour from Alex and, at the time, I wouldn't say my gear was really even all that good.

Earth Staff -> Iron Ram Lance for 2 hour
+HP grip
Bibiki Seashell
Iron Ram Sallet
(don't remember neck, but it wouldn't matter)
Merman's Earring
Merman's Earring
Iron Ram Dastanas
Gallant Surcoat
Merman's Ring
Merman's Ring
Lamia Mantle
Swift Belt
Iron Ram Hose
Iron Ram Greaves

I also used Carbonra for the +hp.

Not a bad set, but not the best, either. Again, the biggest problems we had was Alex spamming his HP restore move. Our first run, we even had 35 minutes for him with no luck. Gear to survive, do what you can to keep the PLD up from the 2-hour, but have a back up plan just in case.

You want to win this fight easily, just make sure you have a BRD with a Storm Fife. Have your PLD sub /DRK or /RDM for the absurdly easy hate control from a distance, and just have your DD's go all out while your PLD holds hate and the PLD and his healer easily keep up with the damage because of the huge mp-refresh rate.

Make your healer a RDM, so that your tank and healer are each getting 10-ish mp/tick, and your tank becomes functionally indestructible. Your DDs can pretty much engage and go make a sandwich.

I know this isnt really the advice you are looking for, but I think you're making waaaaay too much of this fight. I've done it twice (both wins) and tanked it once on nin. The second time I did it we had no tank, only 3 sam/nins, 2 blms, and a sole whm/sch for healing. All of us sams used hasso so ichi and ni timers were doubled. So needless to say you could more than likely blink tank alexander as pld/nin with little to no haste gear. Honestly I don't know why people have such bad luck on this fight. With all your prep this should go quite smoothly though, good luck!

I'll be completely honest with you. I've done this fight 5-6 times, as PLD each time...

Alex was cake to tank, with even a mediocre healer (We had a great one, but I think it could be done with an okay one)

Just use every ability once it's up, with as much emnity as possible. Idle in an earth staff. Most of his attacks are physical, so don't worry too much about MDB gear.

Honestly, it's far harder to stay alive tanking the BLU than it is Alex. Aside from his 2 hour (Trip 'fealty' at 52% to ride it out) I don't think I ever dropped fighting alex.

A missed stun on the blue at the wrong time though, and you're toast.

Be sure you have at least 1x great BLM, (and a /drk or second BLM for stun rotation) or don't bother going in.

Contrary to popular belief, BLU head **** DOES work on the Blue Mage. It's just not as reliable. We won the fight with a BLU using Head **** as often as he could and a RDM/DRK to stun as many of the big moves as she could. I think I ate a total of two Eyes on Me moves during the majority of our fights. One laid me out since it was followed by a Vorpal Blade.

I also found that part of the fight to be a bit tougher than Alex. However, I still say that Gospel of the Lost will be the biggest make or break ability of the fight. I know that's just my experience, but seeing Alex never drop below 40% is heart breaking.
