Hi there,
I've just hit 55 Paladin and i'm wondering what gear to get.. The extensive paladin guide suggests RK breeches and chainmail but i notice it has more DD related stats than tanking stats..
I'm just wondering what I should be doing around this level and how i should focus my gear for future parties. I aim to be the best tank i can be, whether it be by means of tanking or by keeping enmity via various means.
Any advice would be golden.

Few threads down there is the guide to DD tanking style, check it out.
Basically if you compare the DD gear to the tanking gear you get things like:
Haub V AF 10atk + ACC, 5str + dex V 2 more def 4 VIT and 2 ENM
I guarantee you haub will give you more then a 2% increase in DoT and therefor generate more hate then the enm and you will not notice the lost def. and vit. Not to mention since you killed the mob faster you got hit less, therefor taking less dmg and speeding up kill speed for more xp/time.
To give you an Idea of gear my tp set on my 60pld right now is
Bastard sword + 1/ Iron ram shield / smart grenade
Valk mask (7atk) / chiv chain / buckler earring / spike earring
Haub / 4th gauntlets / woodsman ring / ulth ring (taou ring 4acc/atk)
high breath / life belt / R.K. Breeches / AF
Notice how I still use af boots and buckler earring because blocking really does reduce damage taken by A LOT
I do have a macro to switch to full AF so that I can have max ENM boost for cures and JA's and I macro in swift belt for flash to shave those seconds off flash.
Also I strongly suggest eating sushi as even with DD gear and sushi I havent seed 80+% ACC on my parser for me yet -_- (been popping crab sushi on birds since it's just as cheap as mithkabobs)
Oh and be prepared to get looked at funny for DD equips as this is a relatively new concept . . . but trust me IT WORKS!

Gear for DD and shield. Macro enmity. If you're overcamping to the point where you could use more defense (happened to me some), use tacos or ride Defender. The difference that gear would afford won't really do much.

Ive been DDing pld since I first could equip my sword. And what I mean by that is that my mind/mentality was DD. I focus'd on that aspect of my job the most. I usually make a list of gear that Im going to aim for getting along my ways of exp. And note when I should get/buy if I dont already have them saved.
Most of your damage will come from your sword's dot. Your job has an excellent skill rating and on top of that a very nice delay. Provided that you can connect, youll be putting out a reasonable amount of damage.
Most important thing about being a DD pld, is that you have to have the mentality for it. You have to be focused for it. If you arent playing to succeed, you will fail DD pld style, as many have and think turtle style was better. That just means that they were still in turtle mentality and thats why it didnt work.
Ive over camped before on pld, DD still works. I went to mire for imps at level 62-63 never had a problem. Mt Z was a pain though, those worms were evil. I died there a few times, yet none of it ever affected the pt.
If you arent holding hate a majority of the time, I can see where you might consume a lot of MP as the mage/mages will have to dump cures on you and everyone else. But if the mages are only curing you the majority of the time, the extra damage you take will not be noticeable. Esp if all the mp is going just to you.
If Mp is an issue as there isnt enough, chances are hate is all over the place and Mp is being over used more than it has to, and that has nothing to do with how DD paladin works, but your own skill as a tank.
If you dont know how hate works, chances are turtle or DD wont be doing anything for you, and turtle even more of a useless approach.
what i did was gear up full dd and dont use any food till after 2-3 mobs to see how things go. if i feel im taking a beating, i use tacos. tacos cover all the defensive stats i need while still in dd gear. if things dont hit too hard ill just pop a kabob.

Essentially i distilled this:
*Macro in AF for enmity and curing
*Quicker killing means less damage to me, more to mob hence more enmity, and better for party

I've kinda had a mix between DD and turtle. Not because I'm stuck on how i want to plat /tank, but do to gil constraints. There are some nice DD peices that are affordable, that will boost your atk thus kill faster.
Iron Ram Shiled is amazing!! Garrulous Ring is great str+3 & agi+3. The agi helps with shield proc rate. Royal Gaurds Collar is decent if u can't get a Chiv Chain. Chiv chain is kinda expensive. NQ Amemet mMantle is a must and cheap! Sipahi Zeraphs are nice too. agi+3 same as Af, but it also has str+2. For Swords go with a Bastard Sword/+1 its not too expensive and had great dps. Then Get Espadon/+1.
My actual armor is AF, because haubergeons are expensive, worth it but expensive. My stats were usually str+9-12 depending. and Vit+18. I could take a hit and dish it out. The only other thing is to use Bream sushi. Vit+5 and Acc+, its phenomenal for a DD Pld, and cheaper than tacos.
