My misfortune thanks you.

i'm pretty sure that story warrants DETAILS rather than CLIFF NOTES.
Well, I can't really go into FULL details, but I'll give you the basics.
My unit is usually in charge of going into the bad guys' houses and, well, violently taking them down. This is by either scaring the **** out of them, or killing them. It usually involves Flashbang grenades, and a lot of screaming. We didn't have the grenades, but plenty of screaming.
Well, the first thing we have to do is kick the door in, which is usually my job. I'm not huge in any sense of the word, but I've got pretty long legs for my body size, and I did a little kick boxing as a kid. In other words: I'm pretty good at kicking ****.
So I kick the door in, and we charge the room of where the OPFOR (
Opposing Force. People being the badguys during training exercises) was hiding out, apparently having lunch. We find two people in the room and they almost literally crapped themselves. We put them down and cuff them, and get ready to explore the rest of the complex. When we breach rooms, the person closest to the next room, hallway, or (
in this case) staircase becomes the pointman. Which was me.
We stack up, and I start up the stairs. Keep in mind, we were
LOUD AS @#%^ when we broke into the building, so there is no element of surprise here. We're supposed to be swift and aggressive at this point.
Of course, we had no actual intel on the building except it was where the enemy was stationed. Anyway, my fourman team gets to the top of the stairs and there is a door to my front, and standing in the doorway aiming his rifle right at my face. Apparently we were
really scary with our screaming and rifles and all that, and he fired his weapon right at my face.
Its not
much of a shot, the blanks. They cause a small flare and a really loud pop. It isn't so bad, unless it happens right at your face. So at this point I'm blinded, my ears are ringing, and my eyebrows are all but burnt off. I stumble back, and while the rest of my team (
and the guy playing OPFOR) try to catch me, I slip through their grip and go sliding face first down the stairs.
For what its worth, getting out of a situation like that with only a really cut up knee is a miracle in itself. Okay, a cut may be a little understatement, as it was deep enough to "see the bone," as the doctor told me. Honestly, I'm not even sure how it happened. I guess it would have helped if I had tightened up my knee pads, too, but we were wanting to get in and out quickly.
Either way, it was fun. I was actually laughing (
from the shock; I really wasn't sure how to act at that point), and the guy that "killed me" was down there freaking out more than I was.
They splinted my leg as a precaution, strapped me down to a litter and put me in an ambulance. Someone got some good exercise in calling in for a medical evacuation.
Good training.
Oh, and "Safety Kill" is what you're supposed to yell when in close quarters instead of discharging your weapon so stuff like this doesn't happen. Edited, Sep 14th 2009 2:58am by lolgaxe
