Actually, it's worth nothing that to a degree, with Laevateinn, you could concivably get the MAB aftermath without meleeing, since as an all-purpose staff, it'll let you actually take advantage of occult accumen. It'd just be faster to get that aftermath going by adding in melee.
Actually, that's what I see the purpose of Hvergelmir as being, as well. It's not better for damage than other staffs, true. I see it's purpose as being a metaphysical battery, instead of increasing the power of your spells, it allows you to charge up tp by nuking, then use that tp to restore your mp. I do think it would be good if they added some enhances occult accumen to hvergelmir though, since blm gets fairly low tiers as I understand? No idea what actual tp gain rates with occult accumen look like on blm, since I've not made a point to play around with it, and at present I just staff swap. Ultimately, I think hvergelmir is less about damage and more about sustainability. It is also a pretty good beating stick.
