Flame Spikes worth it?Follow

Hello all, please excuse my anonymonity(sp?):)

Anyhow, do u all think it's worth it to get Flame Spikes before some other stuff? I currently have about 6000 gil, and could buy at my auc house for about 4500-5000 gil. Here's the thing: I really need some enchanted gear to up my MP (rings, necklace, earrings, etc). I mean, I heard it is self-only (I know someone will correct me if I'm wrong) and I just don't see a use for it since I rarely engage at melee anymore.

Please, all u high lvl mages, help me out...

P.S. I'm a fifth of the way through lvl 10.

Unless someone's thought of a use I haven't thought of I've found zero use for this spell. Its duration is too short, it's self only and if I happen to pull agro I only get hit once or twice before the tank pulls it back off me. I'm not going to recast this spell every fight on the off chance I'll get hit once or twice.

If it was castable on others or it lasted an hour it would be worth it. Otherwise, totally worthless spell.

If I could remove it from my spell list and sell it back at AH I would so I wouldn't have to scroll past it all the time.

Well, some mobs drop Blaze Spikes -- that's how I got it. I can't remember exactly which mob I got it from, but it would have been either low-level Yagudo or Goblin ... the magic-using varities, obviously. It must be a rare drop, as I've only found it once.

So, given that I never paid a single gil for it, I've found it to be very useful. We Black Mages avoid melee, of course, but it is an inevitability. Having Blaze Spikes on me has saved my life more than once (you are correct that it is a self-only spell, doing 5-10 points of damage to any enemy that strikes you.) It doesn't do a lot of damage, but even a small advantage can make the difference in a life-or-death battle.

As to whether or not you'd be better off spending that money on equipment, it's hard to say. I have a fair amount of low priced equipment to boost my INT and that's all I use. At level 18, I still only have about 5,000-6,000 gil total invested in my equipment. That may be a mistake on my part, but I think I do ok...

If you are going to choose a subjob for your black mage like white mage then blazespikes will help you out. Casting it early as a BMG/WMG will raise your magic stats and offer another attack when a monster successfully attacks you. Helps alot when you are in this soloing situation. Other then that really no use.

I have to say that your play style really determines whether this is a good spell. If you're in groups a lot, it's completely useless, as you shouldn't be getting hit. However, if you're soloing, this spell is great. I usually have monsters taking more damage than I do every time they hit me. I group a lot, but I also solo quite a bit (usually to get items) so I just switch off what spells I use. Also, if you're in Windurst, don't bother buying it. Just do the first two quests for the Star Onion Brigade. Give them a rarab tail for the first quest, and 4 wild onions for the second, and they'll give you this spell.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've compiled all the information given into pros and cons, and have decided to upgrade my gear 1st to have more mana/INT (since I like grping more than soloing), and if I have money left over, will buy Flame Spikes last.

You can get the flamespikes in a quest too! It called Know Ones Onions and you talk to the Kohlo Lakolo at G5 of Port Windurst. You have to do Tuth, Justice, and the Onion Way first though.

Personally, I really like this spell. First of all, this is a must have if you solo. Even if you don't solo, it is great to have cast on yourself when you are in a party. Think about this, we all know the Black Mage can do Mad amounts of Damage, and how many times have you had the Mob come after you BECAUSE of that Mad Damage? Sure, I'd rather not get hit at all, but if I am going to get hit, I want the Mob to get hit too, hence the usefulness of this spell. Granted it doesn't do a whole lot of damage to start (approx. 10), but I just got the spell and haven't increased my Enhancement Magic Skill much yet. I say go with it if you have the means, and others are right about the quest. If you're not in Windrust, see if you can find someone there to get it for you.

I'm level 10 and spent 5k gil to buy this spell. Is it worth the price? Probably not. However, the spell is worth having.

Early on in the game Blaze Spikes is the only spell that builds up your enhancement magic (just as bio is the only spell that builds up your dark magic), so just by using this spell you're building up a vital magic skill.

My spell only does 6 dmg to enemies but already it has saved my butt a few times and is definitely worth it if you solo.

Early on when soloing, it is well worth it, as it *seems* to give you a little extra time bewteen casts to fire off an extra spell.

_WHEN_ I have to run someplace to get a chocoboo or just to get a quest item, I have it on, just as a little extra precaution.

When in a party, I only use it if the mobs have been getting by the tanks, for the above reason - although, I'm prettysure all I am doing at that point is generating more hate, but that extra little bit of damage is sometimes more than what the tanks are inflicting.
