Bah, no Stoneskin and no Blink means the BLM/SCH will only be doing much less damage than a BLM/WHM or BLM/RDM. You'll also die from the first AOE that reaches the backline and those aren't rare in most massed battles or HMN battles.
So get a THF to accompice you. Have a SMN cast stoneskin and blink. Or, for HNM, use another sub...
Im not saying /SCH is great for all uses. I wouldnt suggest it at all for solo use. I wouldnt suggest it if you party doesnt have some form of -na healing. I also realize that for CURRENT party setups, it hasnt changed too much. But if SE starts encouraging people back to traditional party setups, I think /SCH will really shine.
I see /SCH being a good choice for things like sleeping mobs in Dynamis. Honestly, with the way those mobs hit... just how much difference is Stoneskin and Blink gonna make in the end? And, will it make more of a difference than a longer lasting, more reliable landing sleep would do? A mob cant attack you if its asleep. When I went BLM to dynamis, I found stoneskin got me maybe an extra hit, and half the times I was dead before both blinks were used up. If tanks let the mobs start hitting me, I was usually headed for a dirtnap regardless.
I also see it being good for instances where hate isnt as big an issue, but MP cost is. If the tank has solid hate, and perhaps a THF to help him out... 10% cost reduction with an additional 50% every 4 mins could prove useful.
And as for XP... when I leveled, apparently I had me a wonderful tank. I usually saw stoneskin and blink as wasted time/MP. Great for those few times I pulled hate... but most of the time the things were wearing off naturally.
And in many of the parties Ive been in with BLM, for the most part -na spells were only used on themselves. As a general rule, they were focused more on stun and nuking, and would only through a cure or -na if it was ABSOLUTELY necessary (and sometimes not even then... ><) When I was the BLM, I was too focused on a mobs HP and what moves I needed to stun, I left the -na to the BRD or RDM.
I just dont think that /SCH is as useless as people are making it out to be. I also dont think SCH is at its final incarnation, and SE will be tweaking it as is. I think that now its a viable subjob choice for certain situations, and will prob improve over the next few months.
