I use to play FFXI way back when level 75 was the level cap, so I'm treating this experience as a whole new game. After many hours of reading about jobs and roles, I've come to the conclusion that DNC & NIN are the jobs I want to play. My question is very basic I suppose;
Is it reasonable for a new player to level up DNC as my first job? (after unlocking it of course) Or well I be gimped through lack of gear?
If so what route should I take for a better experience first time through, BST?

You will not be gimped by your lack of previous equipment. Dancer is nice in a way because it can't wear any Abjuration set, Sky armor, Salvage v1 gear, etc. There's nothing like that to collect for it, just AF1, AF2 (+2), and AF3 (+2).
Take it to 99 and cap your skills/merits, then focus on collecting AF3+2 and a pair of good daggers (Aluh Jambiya and Oynos Knife are a good pair for solo). After you're semi-well-set up, get in to Dynamis (you can solo this now) and grind out some gil/AF3+2.
