Listen up my booty loving friends, I need some help!

I am in the middle of an identity crisis. I am a returning player that leveled BRD on Midgardsormr back in 2004 and was involved with some endgame (back then at least) activites. I never got a lot of gear for my BRD beyond stuff that is obsolete now (Opo opo crown, etc) and I quit and gave everything I had away.

However I recently returned with my brother to play with friends again and I decided I wanted to level DNC (possibly my favorite job ever!) and got it to 75 back in January or something.

I want to level another job - but I have this complex about leveling job with compatible merits (5 Dagger 8 Sword currently and I stopped Dagger on purpose as I am undecided at the moment) and leveling a job useful to be abused by friends. I know this is a hamrful policy towards my own well being but it's just one of my things.

So I've been torn between what I want to do. I don't feel like BRD is my main job (although I am unfortunately on it more then I would like - though I find it more enjoyable then when it drove me insane back in 04-05) and I do love DNC however due to the hive mindset of "unless you fill a specific role or provide super buffs - you're useless" - it is difficult to be included in things.

I have a desire to do many activites although I am commited to none. I operate in a small social linkshell who do random events (ZNM, etc) and another incredibly small linkshell of - in my opinion - some of the best and most knowledgeable people in the game. We have interest in doing small-group oriented things (which usually results me being BRD) but due to some of us being in Singapore and some on the East coast - scheduling is difficult with so few people.

Sorry for the above, here's the meat of the question:

Do these things make COR a job for me:

1.) My first linkshell in '04 was called PiratesNeverDie (PND4lyfe!) and we pretty much invented Yarr. :d

2.) I enjoy support jobs, I really do - but BRD is just so boring. Even when I am 'busy' it is just not very fulfilling to me anymore.

3.) I like flexible jobs that can fill different roles based on the situation.

4.) I enjoy jobs that was generally "desired" for XP and events - because when I excel at these jobs people notice and remember you.

5.) I very much enjoy the physical DD nature of COR as well as it's seemingly inherit ability to kite/QD kill things here and there - which give some seemingly exciting solo oppertunites as well as a more involved role other then spamming buffs and tossing cures at people.

6.) I have Alchemy 100 and am currently maxing smithing to 60 to HQ bullets (regardless if I do COR or not - it's steady income along with some other things) which would help out.

7.) Booty excites me.

8.) I heard Pirates excel at obtaining Booty.

9.) Although more people are leveling COR - there's still very few "good" COR out there who play the job to it's maximum potential. I am a person who plays jobs to their maximum when I truly love the job.

There's many more reasons I have been mulling over COR the past few weeks, but those are a general basis.

The other job I was seriously considering is PLD - due to wanting to be flexible and have a tank job leveled (since I do have a 'support' job in the means of BRD) as well as getting a different perspective on the game from a tank view - plus it would help our small shell since we really only have one Paladin tank who honestly shouldn't be on anything other then his WAR since he's a very competent, powerful Warrior.

However.. I want a job to make my 'main' job.. and I want it to either be A.) DNC or B.) the next job I level. I want to commit myself to the job and do everything I can to maximize myself at it.. My merits line up with both of my projected goals really, having Sword for PLD and Dagger and Sword for COR (As well as already having Joytoy for DNC messing around, etc). .

Argh, so very torn!

Did anyone ever have a similiar situation or anyone who would randomly offer their experience? What sold you on COR? Anyone reading here that wanted to do COR but picked something else?

Yarr!

Eh, I'd say lvl both jobs as subs to get a feel for them. Usually by 37 you can tell whether a job is going to appeal to you or not. I'm a SAM and COR main. I consider them 1A and 1B in terms of usefulness, importance and how much fun I have playing them.

If you're worried about lvling a job and then being required to come as it to everything, well maybe COR isn't a great idea for you but you'll certainly get invited to stuff which may not be as true on DNC. But if you really love a job, you probably won't mind (hell, may even enjoy) being asked to come as it often.

I've considered lvling PLD or RDM for versatility but I don't want to be stuck on them either. They are important jobs and while they would make me more versatile, I think they'd also potentially keep me off jobs i truly enjoy. Find the job or jobs that you really enjoy and then work on making them as good as you can through merits, events, gear, knowledge, etc etc.

While I said lvl it to 37 first, you may want to go 45+ on COR. Until you get quick draw (40) and evokers roll (44 i think), you won't have a true feel for playing COR. Hell, you might even need to wait for 57 and slug shot lol. But I lvled SAM originally as a hypothetical sub for WAR (and this was WAY before hasso/seigan made /sam a legit choice for many DD). SAM was boring until 30. Once I got meditate, I knew I was hooked.

I also suggest trying both out, especially because if you level both PLD and COR, you'll have a variety of useful jobs to pick from and likely won't be stuck on just one job all the time. But it does sound like COR is the perfect job for you. (I've noticed that most people who like DNC also like COR, and vice versa.)

For me, COR went through jumps in enjoyability at 22 (being able to shoot), 40 (can start doing a full 4-roll cycle, and also Quick Draw), ~56 (better armor and Slug Shot), 60 (Barrage and full **** AF), 70 (Joyeuse), and 75 (merits). So if you're getting close to one of those levels and wondering if it's really the job for you, I'd suggest sticking it out until the next "jump."

PLD I can't help you with, since I've never leveled it.

Also, this.

Yeah, I'd say that counts.

COR isn't really that busy. I went from MNK to COR, the job that basically only hits attack and afk's and the job that arguably has the most to do, and it wasn't really that much of a hassle. At first I was nervous that once I got evokers roll and had to start a 4 buff rotation it would be hard, but I actually find it easier since the buffs wear off right when phantom roll is back up. Granted I haven't pulled after getting evokers yet, but it shouldn't be too hard.

I've only played COR as a support/DD so far, so I can't comment on it.

I've been told that I'm an awesome COR so many times now, and I've only partied like 4 times :P

COR isn't terribly good at soloing most things; keep in mind that COR is support first, DD second. While you can solo somethings I wouldn't recommend unless you're good at it (which I'm not lol).

I'd really recommend COR then. The worst aspect of COR are the bullets, and you've got that covered.

Aye.

COR should get TH >:(

Ironically, the first party I had with a COR was when I was a COR, and I've been playing since basically NA release (though not very actively). Since then I've only partied with 1 other COR, so it's still a very rare job.

The best test to see if COR is right for you is if you can listen to this song repeatedly and still love it.

But all in all, the best part of COR is making Pirates of the Caribbean references. Like when I was lvling COR after the EP exp update with COR's roll and Emp. Band and kept reporting on my LS getting like 150 exp from EP or whatever it was. I also have a Black Pearl in my bazaar set for max money. People don't get it when I'm on my MNK, but I've got a few "lol, nice one" tells when on my COR. There's also "capturing" empty airships and drawing your character as a COR.

Just as side note, you will actually want to get Smithing to 61 for HQing Steel Bullets. They cap at 30 smithing, which means 61 smithing will give you a ~25% HQ rate, compared to a 10% HQ rate with only 60 smithing. You can accomplish this through basic synth support from the guild, a guild point item, or *gasp* de-leveling alchemy to 99 (which for alchemy would not have any negative implications in practice, though I am sure it would be a huge psychological blow).

A mithra friend was standing inside a chest in salvage.
I openned the chest.

The first thing that sprung to mind seeing this mithra in the chest is "YAR! THIS BE THE FINEST BOOTY I EVER SEEN!"

Make your own bullets!

Trust me, I'm currently leveling cor myself and I have to say I've saved a ton of gil by making my own bullets. Bronze Bullets @1 > Bullets @22 > Paktong @ 35 > Iron Bullets @50 > Steel Bullets @66. All but Pakton quiver.

First off. Tin bullets are better pre-22 bullet than Bronze and just as cheap to make (if not cheaper).

Secondly, anyone that makes Paktong bullets is a fool. Paktong ingots are more expensive than steel ingots and the bullets require a higher alchemy skill than steel making HQ's less frequent (tier 2 would be 103 Alchemy skill). Granted you can farm the kopparnickel ore to lower the cost, but that's still a big chuck of time just to get some bullets that are only 4 dmg stronger than the far cheaper and easily crafted (brass) bullets.

But as they say, "a fool and his gil are soon parted"

You're absolutely right about the Tin, I forgot about those. And in regards to the Paktong Bullets, I did spend the time in Oldton farming the koppernickle and buying the other ores from NPCs/Bazaar dirt cheap. Granted I didn't make all that many stacks but it was a good filler. I used them only for WS's while TPing with Bullets.

That's the only way to make it remotely cost effective. i'd have just sold the Paktong ingots and lived with Bullets and more gil in my pocket for other things like better quality food (sole sushi over squid sushi for instance).
