Hello to all,

I'm interested in raising summoner up and I'm starting from scratch...I'm just curious what the best course of action would be these days and what avatars I should get first if not all. I know nothing about best subs or really much at all to be honest...It would be greatly appreciated.

Look here for summoner guides/discussions: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?fjob=15&mid=1188823663309266438&page=1

You should try to get them all, but no one will blame you if you can't get Fenrir, Diabolos, Odin, or Alex right away.

You can solo all of the other ones as a level 20 SMN. Here is a guide to doing it: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/jobs.html?fjob=15;mid=1092674588861471843;page=1

Or if you have a higher level job, you can solo the harder versions of them. Anything 75+ should be able to solo or at least duo them. I would assume Fenrir is easily soloed with the new level cap now, too, especially since some jobs could solo or duo him at 75, but if you don't have a high enough job, you will need help. Start working on CoP/ToAU missions so you can eventually get the other three. Odin, especially, is a lot of fun in abyssea.

For just about any mage job 82+, you won't go wrong with /RDM. At really low levels, go with /WHM. Eventually, /SCH becomes better than /WHM with all its job abilities that help save and regenerate MP and the ability to cast aspir.

At the current level cap each of these subs offers:
RDM: stoneskin/blink/phalanx, refresh, convert, single-target bar-spells, Cure 3
SCH: light/dark arts, strategems, reraise, sublimation, status cures, drain/aspir, sleep, cure 3, weather spells that can be paired with gear like our relic head to reduce perpetuation costs
WHM: stoneskin/blink, divine seal, aeo bar-spells, cure 4, auto-regen, reraise

They are really old, but a lot of the information is still relevant. Even the equipment guides shouldn't be bad for 1-75. (There was never very much gear that was great for SMN until 50+ anyway). The leveling guides may not be very relevant, because leveling is so different now, but things like effective kiting/soloing strategies are still important to know.

Most of the new guides are centered around abyssea.

*For a short time, Atma of the Ducal Guard made avatars 100% immune to physical damage. SE fixed it, so now it looks like they only get about 80% immunity, but pairing Ducal Guard with a regen atma, like Mounted Champion, is still very powerful. For soloing some NMs, you may like defense better than offense.

Post 75, it seems like the only equipment worth mentioning is the SMN AF3, (Caller's gear), all of the Caller's accessories, some of the new Augur's gear, a few trial of the magian staffs, and a couple of random abyssea drops such as this: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Soulscourge
this: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Eidolon_Pendant
and this: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Tiresias%27_Cape
A lot of old gear is still good, though, so don't skip over it just because you can get from 30 to 90 in a day. I still use most of my AF2 from Dynamis, Nashira hands, my Garuda headpiece, and classic SMN pieces like evoker's ring, Yinyang robe, and carby mitts. (Although, with the AF3 body, YYR is more of a macro/idle piece than an almost full-time piece now)

If you are on Asura you can send Rizzo a /tell and I will help you with the missions.

Rizzo provided a lot of great information to help you get started. I just wanted to add that I think /WHM gets a bit short changed in this analysis. RDM and SCH clearly provide much better options for MP restoration but /WHM still has utility at higher levels. In Abyssea, /WHM will allow you to help proc both red and yellow weaknesses if needed. /WHM also provides status cures and particularly Stona which will never become available from /SCH. It also gives access to Haste (/RDM will too eventually) which is handy when you don't want to use Hastega. It is definitely a sub I would recommend leveling all the way. I feel the same way about SCH and RDM as well.

Interesting, thank you for that and all responses so far. Right now I'm taking monk up a bit to get my subjob items and then it looks like I'll focus on my mage jobs a bit more.

Slightly off topic, and somewhat of a repeat to what I posted in a different thread a few minutes ago:

Get your Carbuncle Mitts as soon as you possibly can, they are level 20 and absolutely amazing.

Edit: more info...
Low level soloing is almost entirely carbuncle based, whether you have the mitts or not, so get those mitts! And pick up the FoV refresh, it will do wonders for you.

Astral Burn parties will require you to have Shiva and Ramuh. Some people are for or against them... I'm not going to past judgement, just let you know you need these two avatars.

Eventually Garuda and Titan will give you hastega and stoneskinga, respectively. But, realistically, by then you should already have all the avatars.

Odin and Alexander, the level 75 avatars that only work during astral flow and only are obtainable after completing ToAU, have lost a lot of their luster. I almost never use Odin anymore due to Shiva putting up fantastic numbers with the right atma and I have only ever used Alexander on a Dynamis Lord zerg.

I would recommend picking up at least one spirit pact, it doesn't matter which. Some go for as little as 5k. The reason for this is if something goes horribly wrong and you lose your avatar you can pull out a spirit... they summon very fast. Also, they take very little physical damage. This will give you time to run far enough away to summon an avatar or give you a chance to hightail it for the zone. Hiding behind a spirit has saved me even on a difficult level 90 solo. It's never my preferred method of handling a situation, but it's always in my toolbag.

Best of luck!

P.S. I'm also on Asura. Had no idea so many of us were in here :D

I've still done 9k with Odin on Pankrator (or whatever omega is called) but that was in healing due to hard timing :)

I am an aspiring summoner too. Currently trying to get my first class to 30 so I can go do the double rainbow quest. I've watched a few fights of the lvl 20 fights and they seem pretty straight forward. What about the carby mittens? From what I read that is a very high level drop. Any suggestions on how to obtain those? I would love to have carby out for free.

whoa whoa whoa... i am on Asura too. Maybe we can all group up and do an Astral Burn!! My name is Swixie.

p.s. I am also looking for a linkshell if anyone is recruiting. I would like to join one that isn't afraid to group up and get some levels or farm. The one I am in now only talks, crafts and solo... not really what I wanna be doing.

Carby Mitts are definitely a higher-level battle, so you'll want high-level help. I'm currently on a short break from the game, but if you happen to see me around (same name in-game) then feel free to ask for help and I'd be happy to help you fight it. You should try to find a Uggalepih Offering for the fight before asking for help, just to make things easier. :) Also, a Prelate Key wouldn't hurt, but that's slightly harder to get on your own and it's possible, if tricky, to get past the door without one.

As for the Lv20 battles, you're right, they're fairly straight-forward once you get the strategy down so that's a good way to get the main 6 avatars. Fenrir is also nice to have, but requires a lot more high-level help to get. You don't have to worry about Diabolos, Alexander, or Odin until later in the game.

Yeah, luckily I had a LS-mate who had the mitts wanted to solo the NM for fun, so I outposted to Yhoator and made it in time for them to drop to me. It's good to have the outposts, just in case.

I would level WHM first. I am unsure if you have unlocked Summoner yet, but having the WHM teleports + a large list of outpost warps (I personally have them all thanks to the new changes to outpost warps) allowed me to get all the weather for my Ruby in under two hours. And the only zones I visited were Xarcabard for Ice, La Thiene for Wind, Passhow for Rain/Lightning, Altepa for Sandstorm/Heat wave, and then Sarutabaruta for clear weather. So aside Xarcabard (which is the hard one if you haven't gone there before), it was much, much easier than when I did it on my old character years before (recently come back to the game after trying all the other MMOs out there and none coming close to XI for me)

Plus you get sneak/invis, Cures and you never have to touch it again later when you are higher level. It was the first thing I took to 50 and now I don't have to touch it if I don't want to (but the utility is amazing, so it's hit 56 through Besieged and events, hunting keys and whatnot.

Definitely do the 20 fights. It seems now even if you do the 20 fights, you can still get a mini-fork to teleport there in the future (makes getting to far-away places easier as well, given you are SMN.)

And most importantly, have fun and enjoy it.
