FFXI Windows 7 problemFollow

I decided to play the game again and for some reason I just suddenly got a black screen with the music still playing. Had to force my computer to shutdown in order to get rid of it. I am not sure what happen and don't want to go through it again. I have installed the Vista/Windows 7 POL off S-E's website, run Windows 7 64-bit version, and was also using an Xbox360 controller.

At what point in the login or game did it happen? Has it only happened once?

Just once so far and it happened maybe about 5 minutes after I logged into my character.

How long have you had the box? Sometimes windows updates will crash ffxi when they want to install.

Well haven't had FFXI crash on me like that since, but now I can only get it to work when I use windower. I keep getting this "failed to initialize Direct3D" error if I try to log onto FFXI without windower. I also switched the controller to another usb port since I noticed that the other one was acting a bit funny. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.

Sounds like your reg keys for resolution may have gotten knackered up buy unclean shutdown. This happened to me a few times, usually after one of SE's updates. I have to go into SE's config, set the resolutions from the drop lists, make sure it is fullscreen, exit/save, then log all the way in then out one time via SE's launcher. After that, I can change the resolutions back for my 1080p and it launches fine.
