When I first installed Windows 7 there was a neat seach tool accessed from the Start menu which allowed me to find any files just by typing the name. Now it's gone and I can't seem to search for files anymore. What have I done and how can I get it back?

Did you accidentally change the Start Menu type in the Taskbar Properties to Windows Classic? Also you may wanna check this link.

That link is perfect. I had accidentally disabled searching, for some unknown reason, and the link helped me to reinstate the feature.

Cheers!
