Awkward monitor brightness issue Follow

This has been bugging me for a while now, and I'm not sure how to go about fixing it. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 2232BW monitor, and it is automatically adjusting the brightness according to the overall brightness of what is on the screen. If something very bright (whites, bright colors) is on the screen, the brightness is cranked up to full/normal levels, and everything displays properly. When something dark (black, dim colors) is on the screen, the entire screen will dim itself somewhat in about a half or a full second. As soon as I go back to something that is mostly bright, the screen returns to full brightness a half second later.

It's essentially as if my monitor has an actual iris that needs time to adjust to drastically different brightnesses, the way the human eye takes time to adjust from a dark indoor room to bright outdoors. I actually have two monitors connected, and the other is very consistent and never has issues of this sort. It's making darker toned images/games too dark, and increasing the brightness only makes the brighter toned images/games too bright.

Any ideas?

Is there an auto-adjustment option in the menus, and can you disable it?

You mean like in the monitor's own menu? There are brightness/color options, but I'm not able to adjust any of them. Says they're not available (to be adjusted).

That doesn't affect the brightness/contrast section and only locks the remaining sections. When unlocked (as they were originally) the brightness/contrast and color sections simply say they're "Not Available".

Does your video card have a software control panel (I.E. ATI Catalyst Control Center)? Maybe one of the settings in there will work.

NVIDIA actually. I've looked through here before and nothing seemed to make a difference.

The only setting remotely close is something called "Dynamic contrast enhancement" but that only applies to video playback.

I checked the Samsung website, according to #4 on this page there is an option in your monitor menu called "Dynamic Contrast". When it's enabled it prevents you from making manual adjustments to the contrast/brightness.

Aha! There we go, thanks for the help. It wasn't in the regular menu either, there's a separate menu for contrast settings outside of the brightness/contrast menu.
