CPU fan, system heat, help?Follow

Hey, I've been having some difficulties with my computer lately. So after a one-year hiatus from WoW, I began downloading patches in preparation for coming back. I got to patch 3.1.1, and the downloader stopped at 70%. I don't have WotLK installed on this computer, so that maybe why. But even so, ever since first trying to patch 3.1.1, my computer fan has been abnormally loud. Well not loud, just louder than before.

I downloaded SensorsView to monitor my fan speed and computer temperature. Currently my fan is running at 3000+ RPM, which is louder than normal. It usually runs at about 2500 RPM. My CPU temp stays at 22C/72F; it's fine. GPU runs at 63C/146F, and escalates when I run games, so I think it's fine. SYS and AUX are the problems. When I first boot, SYS starts at around 48C/118F, but after about five minutes it goes up to around 55C/131F, which is what I think causes the fan to speed up. AUX goes from 37C/99F to 44C/112F in the same fashion.

I'm using an Acer Aspire M5100, the CPU is an AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core. Any other specs I need to provide?

Please help me, I know this is kinda trivial but I'd really appreciate some assistance. Thanks a bunch.

Ima coming back to some wow forums as well;)

Anyways, yea not having WoLK might be why your downloader stops, but that has nothing to do with you fan speed.

I'd suggest opening your case up and checking out the dust bunnies. there might be some around your heatsink/fan that could cause it to run louder. Your temps seem fine though for a stock computer. a few utilities I use for regulating temps/fans/etc are (and you can google these) realtemp/rivatuner/cpuz/gpuz.

I'm not sure if you're correlating the incomplete download of the patch with your cpu fan speed. because those have really nothing to do with each other. 55c to me is fine under load. and your cpu fan should rev up. you can always try to go into your bios and set you fanspeed to say 80% constant.

If it's just a matter of questioning why your comp is louder than usual, it might just need a good tank of compressed air.

okay yeah, not having WotLK might be the problem with the downloader. and i dont think to downloader and the fan are correlated, might just be coincidence.
ok, so i opened up my computer and checked the fans. i have 3 fans: one to cool the boards, one to vent air from inside (?), and one to cool the machine as a whole. at least, i think that's how it works. the ventilation fan was inaccessible, but it doesnt look to dusty. the other two were caked with gray crap, so i took a small toothbrush and scrubbed them. i hooked the wires back up and ran it. SYS temp is at 48-49C, everything else is the same. so i guess the problem was indeed the system temperature. the fan is running at 2600 RPM, rather quiet. so YAY i guess that solves it.
im still worried that SYS will kick up above 50C though... owell ill bother the tech boards again when that happens :P
thanks for the reply charred

Those temps to me seem fine. I get worried when i stress test an overclock and it gets beyond 80c. ;)

If the fanspeed continues to be louder than normal you can get a new heatsink/fan. but that might be a huge endeavor for your liking.

Please help me

690G Notrthbridge just runs hot, simple as that. Replace the heatsink with a fan if it really worries you, but there's not much you can do about it, otherwise, aside from expensive impractical solutions that would cost more than just buying a different motherboard. The good news is the thermal envelope is large and you shouldn't see issues until well over 70C.

Just wanted to say, a toothbrush often pushes the dirt and dust in further and causes more problems .

If you can , turn your computer off and unscrew one fan at a time . Each fan should have four screws which you should put safely to one side for when you rescrew it . Remove each fan (it will have a socket connector as well as screws, make a note of where this is ) and give it a good clean with an antistatic wipe . The re-attach.

It won't fix your problems with areas in WoW, but will help to prevent system overheat later on in your computers lifecycle .
