Verizon Wireless USB ModemFollow

Hello, I just recently purchased a wireless USB modem from Verizon (the UM175) for the use of playing World of Warcraft on my PC. Before I made this purchase I was using satellite internet getting about 2000-2500 m/s of latency, which was absolutely horrible, while also using dial up at night, which was a a huge upgrade in latency (I get about 300-500 latency with dial up), but am unable to raid and do PvP because if there is too much information to load the dial up just crashes.

Now getting to my question, there was a verizon tower that apparently was refurbished and put back into use for cellular coverage. This tower is literally in my backyard up a hill. The modem that I had bought from Verizon was made to work off cell signals, which would make you think that I should have no problem. Unfortunately when I go to play World of Warcraft I get a whack amount latency (hit as high as 25,000 m/s), but drops down to around 3,500 m/s. Even worse, it still doesn't actually feel like I am playing with 3,500 m/s, but actually around 1,000-1,200 m/s.

Now, I called the tech's at Verizon and according to their maps, there is no reason why this product should not be working as intended. Is there anyone else who had bought one of these wireless USB modems? Am I doing something wrong? Is there any way to fix this or any solution at all to help make playing World of Warcraft any better? Thank you in advance for any and all responses to my questions.

Edit: Forgot to mention which exact model the modem was.

I use a Sierra Airbus 595U USB modem from Verizon (been using it for just over a year) and for the most part... it's acceptable. What you need to do though is lock the thing into HDR Only mode. You can't ask a Verizon Tech about it, because they will tell you it can't be done. Here is how you do it:

1. Open up VZAccess Manager and make sure your not connected.
2. Press CTRL D to open up a prompt asking for a password.
3. Type in diagvzw
4. This opens up a small box with a couple of buttons on it. Click on the Settings Button.
5. Look for an Option in the window that says "CDMA Only" and "HDR Only". Click on the "HDR Only" bullet.
6. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!
7. Connect as usual.

What is probably happening is the card is using CDMA mode, which is very very slow. By locking the card into HDR mode, your telling the card to only operate on the EVDO band and ignore any non-EVDO band. It's important to note that if the tower your connecting to does not have an EVDO band, you will not be able to connect. If this is the case, follow the steps and put the option back to what it was before you changed it (don't rememeber exactly what that option is called).

While in HDR-Only, I get about 150-250ms latency and have no problems playing WoW while having vent up and have my brother in another room playing FFXI on the XBOX 360 (I share the connection with ICS).

Just out of curiosity, what is your RSSI value? To get this, do the following:

1. Open up VZAccess Manager while you are connected.
2. Click on the Help menu item and select "About VZAccess Manager"
3. In the Hardware Information box, click the scroll down button until you see something called RSSI. If you do this after you have locked into HDR mode, you'll only see something called RSSI. If you do this before locking into HDR mode, you'll see something called "1xRTT RSSI" and "EVDO RSSI" (in which case, tell me what the EVDO RSSI is). It'll be something like -86dBm.

I really really hate to necro an old thread, but I actually did what you told me to do (yeah I know, months later :( ), and it seems to be working better somewhat. The connection (since my last post) has been 50/50 as far as even staying connected to broadband access goes. I still dip into national access multiple times a day, which is frustrating especially if you're in middle of an instance run (and happen to be the tank). Thank you very much for helping me out, and although this post is a little outdated, here is what I get for RSSI as of right this moment: -102dBm. Thanks again.
